The Juan de Salazar Spanish Cultural Centre, in partnership with the National Library of Paraguay, will launch Paper Wings (Alas de Papel), a free Spanish-language reading club for children aged eight to 12. The programme will run from August to November 2026. The club’s aim is to encourage a love of reading through books, creative activities, and shared discussions. Registration is free, although places are limited and advance enrolment is required.
Eight Saturdays dedicated to reading
The initiative will take place across eight Saturday sessions from 8 August to 28 November, between 15:00 and 17:00. Meetings will alternate between the Las Sinsombrero Library at the Spanish Cultural Centre in Asunción and the National Library of Paraguay.
Children will read works by authors from Paraguay, Spain, Mexico, and Argentina. They will also take part in artistic activities, games, and guided discussions designed to make reading a shared experience. Each participant will receive a specially designed reading journal. They can record favourite characters, illustrations, new vocabulary, and personal reflections. Organisers said the journal will strengthen reading comprehension and encourage a closer relationship with books.
Programme highlights
The reading club will begin on 8 August at the Las Sinsombrero Library with Stories to Read with the Heart (Cuentos para leer con el corazón) by Paraguayan author Milia Gayoso-Manzur. The same title will be revisited on 29 August at the National Library.
Sessions on 12 and 26 September will focus on The Old Man Who Was Never in Fairy Tales (El viejo que no salía en los cuentos) by Spanish author Pilar Mateos and Mexican illustrator Mauricio Gómez. During October, children will explore The Goblin of the Cistern (El duende del aljibe) by Paraguayan writer Gladys Gloria Luna.
The final meetings, on 14 and 28 November, will conclude the programme with a children’s book that organisers will announce later. The project also aims to strengthen children’s connection with libraries as spaces for imagination, learning, and community participation.
