Have you ever dreamed of flying a plane? Just a short drive from Asunción, right next to Silvio Pettirossi International Airport, there is a place where you can actually take control of a small aircraft and experience what it is like to be a pilot, as an introduction to flying lessons. Kaori from The Asunción Times had the chance to do this amazing Pilot for a Day experience with Chakair, a company that has been a stable of the aviation community for the last 13 years.
The adventure begins with a one-hour course covering the basics of aviation. You will learn about different types of planes, how they work, and the fundamental mechanics of taking off, flying, and landing. You will also be introduced to the communication system used to speak with air traffic control, ensuring you understand the essential phrases needed for a safe flight.
Then comes the moment of truth. With your instructor by your side, you take the pilot’s seat —yes, the left side — where all the controls are in your hands. The instructor looks at you and says, “Okay, now you’re ready to fly!”
A rush of excitement (and maybe a little fear) kicks in. But do not worry — the instructor has full control of the plane alongside you, ready to assist at any moment. Even if you make a mistake, they are there to correct and guide you, making sure everything is safe. You can even try out different maneuvers that would not pose any danger, allowing you to truly feel the thrill of flying.
A Scenic Flight Over Lago Ypacaraí
As the plane lifts off, you soar toward Lago Ypacaraí, the stunning lake near San Bernardino. Located about 30 kilometers from Asunción, Lago Ypacaraí is one of the largest and most beautiful lakes in Paraguay.
From the sky, you take in breathtaking views — the deep blue waters, the lush greenery surrounding the lake, and the endless horizon. The sky is bright and clear, and if you are lucky, you will even spot birds flying alongside you, sharing the air in an unforgettable moment of freedom.
Looking down, you realise just how green this country truly is. Unlike many places covered in concrete, Paraguay remains full of life, with vast forests, open fields, and untouched landscapes stretching as far as the eye can see. Flying above it all gives you a whole new appreciation for its beauty.
A Comfortable Waiting Experience
Since we went as a small group, we took turns flying, each of us experiencing the flight one by one with the instructor. While waiting, we relaxed in a cozy waiting room, which was fully air-conditioned and had comfortable sofas, a dining table, and a selection of refreshments — all included for free. There was coffee, water, energy drinks, and snacks, including chipitas, Paraguay’s traditional cheese bread, as well as sweets and other treats.
A Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience
As I stepped off the plane, still feeling the adrenaline rush, I could not help but say: “This is one of the best experiences I have ever had in my life!” After your flight, as a special memento of the experience, you receive a certificate called Pilot Experience. It’s a great keepsake that recognizes your bravery and achievement in taking control of a plane, even for just a short time. This is not just a simulation or a VR experience, it’s the real thing! You are up in the sky, controlling a plane, seeing Paraguay from above, and feeling the exhilarating sense of adventure that only pilots truly know.
