Every Sunday morning, Paraguay GAA trains at the Santa Clara Rugby and Hockey Club from 10:30 to 12:30, and anyone can join in. Las Arpas, The Harps, started in late 2024 as a Sunday kickabout and have since won the Lynch Cup in Chile and finished third in their division at the 2026 GAA World Games in Ireland, with players from a dozen countries, most of whom had never touched a Gaelic football before their first session.
This is not a normal sports club. There are men’s and women’s teams, every level is welcome, families are welcome, and nobody is left standing on the sideline. Bring trainers, water and a willingness to have a go. Training is free to come and try.
New players can simply turn up, or message the club first on Instagram at @paraguaygaa or on WhatsApp to club president Giovani Teixeira on +595 972 237 4321.
The Asunción Times is proud to sponsor Las Arpas’ shirts.

Asunción has thousands of English speakers, and most of them have never met each other. Afterwork Networking is where that changes. Every second Tuesday from 18:00, expats, travellers and English-speaking Paraguayans get together for a drink and a chat after work.
It started because local English speakers asked us for something that included them, so it is for everyone who speaks English in Asunción, wherever you learnt it. This is a social evening held in English rather than a class, so come ready to talk.
Free to attend, with name badges on the door so nobody has to guess who is who. Drinks at bar prices. Organised by The Asunción Times.

Whether you are here in Paraguay for a month or three, or just forgot to ever leave, Thursday night is when the digital nomad and expat community takes over a bar in Asunción, from 19:30 until late, somewhere different every week.
Nomads and expats are the same crowd here, just on different timelines. A large share of the expats in Asunción arrived as digital nomads and decided to stay, which is why nobody draws much of a line between the two. Some are passing through with a laptop, some have relocated, some are people who lived abroad and came home to Paraguay. All of them are welcome. It is the biggest community of its kind in Paraguay.
It is a social night, not a sales opportunity, so leave the business cards at home. Free, no sign-up, drinks at bar prices. If you cannot see a venue on this listing yet, it will be confirmed here a few days before the meetup.

More than 300 bird species live within Asunción’s city limits, which tends to surprise people who have lived here for years. The XV Feria de Aves de Sudamérica, South America’s biggest birdwatching fair, spends four days at the Centro Cultural Puerto de Asunción, and the exhibition halls are free to walk into.
Inside there are guides and tour operators from across the continent, nature photographers, conservation groups and more optics than you knew existed. SENATUR runs it, and it is pitched at curious visitors as much as at serious birders.
The fair runs from Thursday 17 September through to Sunday the 20th, so if Friday does not suit you there is the whole weekend. Entry to the expo costs nothing; some of the guided field outings are ticketed separately.

Once a year, Asunción’s most historic street clears its traffic and fills with people instead. Palma Joven marks the start of spring and Youth Month with twelve hours of live music, street food and an open-air fair along Calle Palma.
The music runs from late morning until 23:00, with Kchiporros, Cumbia Juan, Talento de Barrio and DJ Indio Rubio on the bill. Around the stages, embassies, universities and public institutions run the Feria de Oportunidades, sharing scholarships, training programmes and exchange places for anyone weighing up their next step.
Entry is free and there is nothing to sign up for. Organisers expect around 100,000 people through the day, so go early if crowds are not your thing – or after dark, when the street is at its loudest.

The municipality is handing the stage at the historic port to Asunción’s emerging bands for an afternoon. Rock, pop, cumbia and whatever else the city’s young musicians turn up with, all of it original material rather than covers.
It is run as a competition, with bands registering until 20 September, though you do not need to be in one to come and listen. The setting does a lot of the work: the old port is one of the better places in the city to stand outdoors with music playing.
Free, open air, starting at 14:00. Part of the city’s Youth Month programme.
