Paraguay’s National Tourism Secretariat (Senatur), the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF), and the Organisation of Ibero-American States (OEI) have signed a non-reimbursable technical cooperation agreement to revitalise the iconic Loma San Jerónimo neighborhood in Asunción’s historic center.
The main objective of this initiative is to transform Loma San Jerónimo into a sustainable tourist destination that benefits both residents and visitors.
The project includes the development of specific strategies to ensure the neighborhood’s sustainability, preserving its traditions, cultural roots, and the intangible heritage that characterizes it.
With CAF support, educational and artistic programs will be implemented to promote the expression of local cultural identity, empower residents, and contribute to the community’s economic development. In this way, Loma San Jerónimo will consolidate its position as a benchmark for social and tourism development in the region.
The Minister of Tourism, Angie Duarte, reaffirmed the commitment to renovating Asunción’s first “Tourist Neighborhood.” “The neighborhood’s facades are recovering their traditional colors, and we are working on restoring the iconic staircase and the community center, so that visitors can enjoy a privileged view of Asunción Bay from the terrace of Loma San Jerónimo,” she stated.
She also said that “the history of Loma San Jerónimo is in every alley, which is why it’s essential to highlight this place. The revitalisation of the neighborhood seeks to attract tourism and foster economic growth through its tourism activities”, she emphasised.
The Senatur (National Tourism Authority) is leading the revitalisation project, which aims to renew the neighborhood’s image, highlighting its distinctive features and generating a greater flow of tourists. The goal is to generate a positive impact by promoting sustainability. This effort is being carried out jointly with the Ministry of Public Works, the Municipality of Asunción, and the Office of the First Lady.
Loma San Jerónimo will position itself as a model for integrated and sustainable tourism development, in which residents themselves will be protagonists of the transformation through social cohesion, allowing visitors to enjoy an authentic and unforgettable experience, reports the National Tourism Secretariat.
