Gas Panic, a popular local band that pays tribute to the music of Oasis, performed to a full house on Wednesday night (August 21st, 2024). The show kicked off just after 9:30pm and featured all of Oasis’ commercial mega hits, as well as more than a few of their lesser known songs. Hosted by JazzCube, one of Asunción’s trendiest watering holes, the venue and band did not disappoint, with fans regularly jumping out of their seats and shouting the lyrics to their favorite verses. Cold beer and stylish cocktails may have been involved.
Oasis, the English rock band formed in 1991, is one of the most globally successful and recognisable musical groups to come out of the British Isles (or anywhere on the planet) in the 1990s. Their songs continue to receive consistent and regular play by radio DJ’s all over the world. Wonderwall, probably the band’s best known track, is widely referred to as the most covered (that is, performed by musicians other than the songwriters) song in history. This is partly due to the simplicity of the musical chords involved, but also because the song hits you right in the heart, even – or especially – when played by a lone acoustic guitarist. It’s impossible not to sing along.
On Wednesday night, tribute band Gas Panic captured the essence and soul of Oasis and their discography. Notably, the vocals were strikingly similar to the original. Songs played included Wonderwall, Don’t Look Back in Anger, Champagne Supernova, Supersonic, and Stop Crying Your Heart Out. At several points the band handed the lead over to the audience, who carried some of the most famous songs for an entire verse or chorus. Paraguay, it seems, loves Oasis!
Upon reaching the end of their set list for the night, the band thanked the crowd and waved goodbye. In response, the crowd immediately started chanting “Otro! Otro!,” meaning one more song, and the band obliged. It was the perfect end to a perfect night of live rock and roll music.
The event had an entrance fee of 30,000 G., with the show slated to begin at 9:30pm. JazzCube, a vogue restaurant, bar, and event venue in Villa Morra, features top local musical artists nearly every night of the week.
