Paraguay’s Biscuit Market Reaches US$107 Million As Sweet Varieties Lead Sales

Paraguay’s biscuit market is showing steady growth, reaching US$107 million in annual sales. The category also moved around 14,000 tonnes during the latest measured period. According to CCR’s Store Audit, sales value increased 0.7% compared with the previous period. Meanwhile, sales volume grew 1.4% year-on-year across the national market.

Sweet biscuits dominate the market

For shoppers browsing supermarket shelves, sweet biscuits remain the clear favourite. They account for 78% of the category’s total sales value across Paraguay. Salty biscuits hold the remaining 22%, maintaining a smaller but established share. Meanwhile, filled biscuits, plain varieties and wafers continue to attract consumers throughout the day.

These products fit naturally into breakfast, afternoon snacks and quick purchases outside home. Smaller formats also respond to consumers seeking convenient options during increasingly busy daily routines. As a result, the biscuit market consumption extends beyond traditional family meals and snack occasions.

Asunción leads national sales

The capital and surrounding metropolitan area account for 62% of biscuit sales. In comparison, consumers in the country’s interior represent the remaining 38%. This difference reflects the concentration of population and modern retail outlets around Asunción. Supermarkets and self-service stores also provide metropolitan shoppers with broader product availability.

However, the figures also showcase opportunities beyond the capital. Retailers in Asunción and Greater Asunción offer an average of 19 biscuit varieties. Stores in the interior typically provide around 11 varieties for shoppers. Across Paraguay, consumers encounter approximately 14 varieties on average.

More variety could support further growth

The difference in product availability gives brands room to expand their national presence. Increasing the number of options could give consumers more choice outside metropolitan areas. At the same time, broader distribution could help companies reach previously underserved markets. Therefore, the interior represents an important opportunity for future category growth.

The market’s latest figures point towards gradual expansion rather than a dramatic surge. Still, volume is growing faster than sales value during the measured period. This suggests that consumers are purchasing more biscuits while overall value grows at a slower pace.

For shoppers, the trend means more biscuit options may continue appearing on shelves. For retailers and producers, distribution and variety could shape the next stage. As Paraguay’s biscuit market develops, the interior may become increasingly important for expansion. Meanwhile, sweet varieties are likely to retain their leading position across the country.
