Each Tuesday evening from 18:00 to 21:00, digital nomads, expats, and friendly locals come together at the ever-popular English networking event organised by The Asunción Times. Held in a different charming bar or restaurant across the city every other week, these gatherings offer the perfect blend of Paraguayan warmth and international energy. In this People of Asunción series, we introduce the inspiring individuals who make this scene so uniquely alive. In #25, Micah Koppang from the United States.
Meet Micah Koppang
Micah Koppan (22) is from Illinois, U.S., and currently lives in Asunción. She has been in Paraguay for almost five months helping to teach English at a local University.
What is your favourite place in Asunción, and why?
“I like the downtown area, specifically the four plazas. One is Plaza de los Héroes, the other one is I think Plaza de la Democracia. There is just always stuff going on, there are some artisan markets there. It is just a nice outdoor space. It is just a nice area to hang out and chill.”
What is your favourite place outside Asunción, and why?
“I have not really been outside of Asunción besides San Bernadino. San Ber was really cool. It was really nice when we were there, and we were walking through it and exploring, and there was a lot of history there. The architecture was super cool. It was just such a really cozy town.”
What do you love most about Paraguay?
“I think the people are amazing. The people that you meet–they are so kind and helpful to a point where it is almost concerning sometimes. They are just so incredibly kind, and I feel like the vibes are generally much more relaxed here compared to in the U.S., where it is constantly go go go, rush rush rush.”
What do you miss from home?
“A lot of things. I miss my dog, she is super sweet. I miss my friends. One oddly specific thing I miss is cheese curds.”
If you were to move away tomorrow, what would you absolutely take with you from Paraguay?
“I would probably bring some chipa with me, honestly, I really like chipa. I would also probably bring some ñandutí stuff that I bought that I really like.”
