The Central Bank of Paraguay (BCP) has launched a new online platform to provide citizens with direct access to their personal credit reports. The service, named Consulta Estado de Deuda (Debt Status Consultation), is now available through the BCP’s official institutional website. This debt status checks initiative aims to modernise and streamline the process for obtaining crucial financial information, representing a significant step in the digitalisation of the nation’s financial services.
A new era of access with electronic identity
To utilise the new system, individuals must first authenticate themselves using their Electronic Identity credentials (create an Electronic Identity). This digital identification system was developed and is managed by the Ministry of Information and Communication Technologies (MITIC). Consequently, this step represents an important move towards integrating government technology services with the financial sector. The Electronic Identity is strictly personal and non-transferable.
The credentials for the Electronic Identity are straightforward, consisting of the user’s national identity card number, which serves as the username, and a unique password created by the citizen. For those who have not yet registered for this digital ID, the government has made comprehensive resources available.
These include detailed guides and an instructional video on YouTube to facilitate the creation process. In a similar effort, the BCP has published a detailed user manual to guide individuals through the debt consultation platform itself, ensuring the service is accessible to a broad audience.
“150 requests every day”
The introduction of this digital portal is a direct response to the considerable demand for credit information. At present, the Central Bank of Paraguay processes an average of 150 debt status checks requests every day. This manual workload places a significant administrative burden on the institution and can lead to delays. Therefore, the implementation of the online platform is expected to bring substantial improvements in both security and efficiency.
The new system will empower users to manage their own enquiries directly and receive their reports instantly. This removes the need for in-person visits or lengthy processing times often associated with previous methods. For citizens, this means quicker and more convenient access to their credit history, which is vital when applying for loans, mortgages, or other forms of credit. Furthermore, it allows for regular monitoring of their financial standing and provides the ability to quickly identify any potential inaccuracies in their records.
Promoting financial transparency and digital inclusion
The “Consulta Estado de Deuda” platform allows users to view reports from the Central de Riesgo Crediticio (CRC), or Credit Risk Centre. This central database compiles information on the debt obligations of individuals and companies within the Paraguayan financial system. By providing direct and easy access to this data, the BCP aims to enhance financial transparency and empower consumers.
This initiative is also a key component of a wider national strategy to promote digital inclusion and modernise public services. By requiring the use of the MITIC-developed Electronic Identity, the project encourages more citizens to engage with the country’s digital infrastructure.
A mandatory transition to a fully digital system
The Central Bank of Paraguay has also outlined a clear timeline for the complete transition to this new digital model. While the platform is now active and available for use, the traditional methods for requesting debt status reports will be gradually phased out. A definitive deadline has been set at 1 May, 2026, for this transition, giving citizens and institutions ample time to adapt.
