Road improvement works under the Plan 1,000 programme are now underway in the San Pablo neighbourhood of Asunción. The initiative seeks to improve traffic circulation and respond to long-standing infrastructure needs in densely used urban zones.
During January 2026, the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) also has begun the first interventions for the consolidation of the access road to the Bioceanic Bridge. San Pablo neighbourhood was selected as one of the areas to benefit from the programme in the capital due to its strategic location. Local authorities highlighted that the works are designed to reduce congestion while also improving safety and accessibility for residents.
Upgraded road works in Asunción
According to the official schedule, Plan 1,000 will intervene in approximately 11 kilometres of streets across Asunción. This represents around 80,000 square metres of asphalt to be laid or rehabilitated in different neighbourhoods of the city. The road works is financed by Itaipu Binacional and has already been rolled out in several cities and towns nationwide.
In San Pablo, works are initially concentrated on key streets that carry a significant volume of traffic. Current tasks include base preparation, repairs to existing cobblestone paving, construction of drainage channels, and asphalt surfacing. Authorities stressed that drainage works are a central component of the project, aiming to prevent flooding and extend the lifespan of the new road surfaces. These improvements are expected to have a direct impact on daily mobility for residents and commuters alike.
Progress already underway
The total surface area to be upgraded in the San Pablo neighbourhood is estimated at 20,000 square metres. Of that figure, around 12,000 square metres are already in full execution, signalling steady progress since the start of the works. Officials indicated that further interventions will continue in other parts of Asunción as the Plan 1,000 programme advances. Residents are advised to follow official updates regarding temporary traffic diversions and timelines.
