Paraguay Takes Flight: Asunción To Host 15th South American Bird Fair In 2026

Paraguay has been confirmed as the host of the 15th South American Bird Fair 2026, marking a significant moment for the continent’s premier birdwatching event. Set to take place from 17 to 20 September at the Port Cultural Center in Asunción, the fair will bring together scientists, conservationists, tour operators, and birdwatching enthusiasts from across the globe.

Under the motto “Paraguay, a culture inspired by its nature,” the event will celebrate the country’s rich biodiversity, which includes over 726 bird species. It aims to highlight the intrinsic link between Paraguay’s natural diversity and its cultural heritage while underscoring the urgent need to protect its ecosystems.

A showcase of biodiversity and culture

The Bellbird (Pájaro Campana), declared a national symbol by decree, has been chosen as the flagship species for the 2026 fair. Renowned for its distinctive song, this bird will serve as a sonic emblem, representing the event’s commitment to showcasing Paraguay’s unique wildlife.

The fair will feature a diverse programme, including keynote lectures, environmental education symposia, interactive workshops, and art and science exhibitions. Cultural activities will further enrich the experience, offering attendees a deeper understanding of Paraguay’s heritage and its connection to nature.

Birdwatching tours coming up

Organised birdwatching tours will be a highlight, with guided outings to strategic locations across Paraguay, allowing participants to witness the country’s extraordinary birdlife firsthand. These tours aim to showcase the nation’s ecological treasures while promoting sustainable tourism.

The announcement was made at the recent Bird Fair in La Paz, Bolivia, where representatives from the Nature Observers Club (CON), supported by the National Secretariat of Tourism (Senatur) and Paraguayan ambassador to Bolivia, Enrique Guerrero Clari, presented Paraguay as the host. The event enjoys institutional backing from Senatur, the National Secretariat of Culture, and logistical support from DTP Travel Group, among other partners.

South American Bird Fair: A tourism boost

Paraguay’s Tourism Minister Angie Duarte expressed pride in Paraguay’s role as host. “It is an honour for Paraguay to host the 15th South American Bird Fair, an event that positions our country internationally as a destination committed to sustainable tourism and the conservation of our biodiversity.”

“This fair showcases our country’s extraordinary natural heritage and also creates concrete opportunities for communities, tour operators, local guides, and entrepreneurs,” Duarte further noted. The event is expected to foster economic growth while promoting environmental stewardship.
