Astra is the first immersive and interactive show that links astronomy with the cosmovision of Paraguay’s indigenous people. Opening on 14 October 2025, the exhibition will take place at Tatakua Lab, part of the Science Museum of Paraguay (MuCI) in Asunción. Through this experience, Astra offers a sensory journey across the past, present, and future of the universe. The show combines contemporary theories about life beyond Earth with ancestral Guaraní heritage.
Fusion between interstellar exploration and ancestral traditions
In the exhibition’s main poster stands a striking symbol: a Guaraní figure wearing an astronaut helmet. This symbolises Astra’s core concept: the fusion of interstellar exploration and ancestral traditions.
The exhibition was developed with the direct participation of the Ava Guaraní and Ishir Guaraní communities, as well as the Paraguayan Institute of Handicraft. Through this collaboration, the exhibition ensures an authentic connection between indigenous identity and modern science.
What is Tatakua Lab?
Tatakua Lab is one of the creative and experimental spaces at the Science Museum of Paraguay (MuCI), located in Complejo Textilia. Since opening in 2022, the place has become a hub for science and technology exhibitions in Asunción, welcoming more than 40,000 visitors. Moreover, the space has hosted a range of innovative projects, helping make science more accessible and engaging for the public.
Who are the Guaraníes?
The Guaraníes are the main indigenous ethnic group in Paraguay. Originally from the Amazon region, their presence expanded across the southeast of Brazil, northeast of Argentina, most of Paraguay, southeast Bolivia, and parts of Uruguay. Today, they remain deeply woven into Paraguay’s national identity: their courage and resilience are often referred to as the “Guaraní claw,” a concept that symbolises determination, especially in sports.
Their most lasting legacy is the Guaraní language, spoken by over 70% of Paraguayans and nearly nine million people across the Southern Cone, making it one of the most widely spoken indigenous languages in the world. Notably, the Paraguayan currency also takes its name from this heritage.
