Silvio Pettirossi International Airport (AISP) in Luque, Paraguay, is undergoing a complete modernisation. The airport, serving the Asunción Metropolitan Area, will experience extensive remodelling and structural expansion. Moreover, the authorities will enhance the technology involved and improve passenger services. The objective is to meet international standards, as the city and country welcome an increasing number of international events. This information was confirmed by Rubén Aguilar, Director of the National Direction of Civil Aviation (DINAC).
Work being done
The works include the complete renovation of restrooms, lighting, ceilings, floors, and air conditioning systems. DINAC Director Aguilar said the restroom area is completed at 50% already. Additionally, the authorities will expand the northern boarding area. The goal is to inaugurate this part on November 23, before the Copa Sudamericana final.
The government and the DINAC will also modernise the gates area, baggage carousels, and the automated X-ray equipment. In the end, to make this work, it will be an expansion of more than 2,000 m² to improve security controls and passenger flow. The time frame for this part of the project has not been mentioned. The modernisation project also includes the improvement of the parking lot and a new cargo terminal, planned for 2026.
With these improvements, Silvio Pettirossi International Airport is preparing for a new phase, with increased operational capacity, cutting-edge technology, and new air routes. The goal is to position Paraguay as a regional benchmark in connectivity and airport services.
Does this mean flights to the US?
As Silvio Pettirossi Airport In Paraguay is located in the heart of South America, it does need to provide excellent services of international calibre. While the airport is being improved and the security area being modernised, it will need the green light from the United States Government directly to have flights to their country.
Post-2001, the US has implemented stricter aviation rules in partnership with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Since Paraguay lost its flight connection to the US, the country has to implement those measures, and improve security aspect. Meaning, Paraguay will not have flights to Miami and New York any time soon. However, the whole project is a step in the good direction.
In the meantime, Paraguay and Chile are working with Paranair to reimplement a flight route between Asunción (AISP) and Iquique. The Chilean city is one of the final destinations on the Pacific side of the Bioceanic Corridor.
