IPS Central Hospital Builds A Better Emergency Experience For Children

The Central Hospital of the Institute of Social Security (IPS), located in Asunción, has initiated a major program to modernise and expand its Paediatric Emergency Service, marking a significant step forward for healthcare provision in Paraguay’s capital. Construction commenced with planned works expected to transform the department over the coming three months.

The renovation aims to reimagine the patient experience by expanding waiting areas, modernising consulting rooms and integrating critical support services. Dr. Edgar Ortíz said the project will create a more comfortable and efficient environment for patients and staff.

Key renovation phases and facility upgrades

The renovations are being carried out by a local construction firm and will target several key areas. Specifically, these include consultation blocks, appointment scheduling, rapid assessment units, waiting and observation facilities, and inpatient wards.

Dr. Ortíz believes these investments will deliver long-term benefits for patients, their families, and the hospital community. “Our aim is to ensure that every child and parent who comes through our doors has access to care that is not only clinically excellent, but also provided in a safe and welcoming environment,” he said.

A new on-site pharmacy

Once works are complete, families will benefit from a seamless care experience, he states. The modernised facility will bring together appointment scheduling, registration, ambulatory observation, and consulting rooms within a single, centralised space. Importantly, a new on-site pharmacy will be established, further streamlining the patient journey.

The first construction phase includes the expansion of the paediatric emergency entrance, and the construction of new restrooms with gender-specific facilities for young patients. Following this, subsequent improvements will feature upgraded flooring and walls, modernised electrical systems, improved ventilation, and larger windows to maximise natural light.

Hospital ensures care throughout renovation

The hospital, located at Santisimo Sacramento in Ascunción, has temporarily relocated the paediatric emergency team within the complex to ensure continuous care. Consultations are currently taking place near the former surgery and trauma lounge, directly opposite the Emergency Laboratory and adjacent to the biometric timekeeper. Dr. Ortíz reassured the public that all essential services remain operational during the upgrade.

The hospital has made special arrangements for ambulance arrivals. The emergency vehicle will now use the access route via Hemodynamics, through the car park between the Emergency and Radiology departments.

The IPS Central Hospital remains committed to providing uninterrupted emergency paediatric services throughout the renovation period. The IPS looks forward to welcoming patients to the newly upgraded, modern facilities upon completion.
