The story that reignited hope across Paraguay is set to reach international audiences. El Renacer Albirrojo (The Albirrojo Rebirth) is a documentary chronicling Paraguay’s return to the FIFA World Cup. The film premiered in Argentina on 13 May 2026, marking the start of its international rollout. Then, it continued with a New York screening on 17 May 2026 at the AMC Empire 25 Cinema Complex in Manhattan, near Times Square. Next, it will be premiered in Spain on 21 May 2026.
The film, directed by Armando Aquino and Alfredo Galeano, explores the emotional journey behind Paraguay’s qualification for the 2026 World Cup following a 16-year absence. The documentary combines exclusive interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, and personal anecdotes from supporters across the country. As a result, the production has quickly emerged as one of Paraguay’s most significant recent audiovisual projects.
The Albirrojo Rebirth’s narrative

Director Alfredo Galeano said the film was designed to focus primarily on people rather than solely on events on the pitch. The story builds towards Paraguay’s decisive qualifying match for the 2026 World Cup against Ecuador. The documentary examines how football influenced daily life in Paraguay, from neighbourhoods and households to workplaces and community spaces.
A key aspect of the documentary follows Paraguay’s road back to the World Cup after years of disappointment. Through the experiences of Paraguayans from different social backgrounds, it shows how each victory altered the national mood. A prolonged period of sporting frustration gradually gave way to renewed optimism. This shift followed the arrival of a new coach and a string of positive results. Ultimately, this helped restore a sense of unity and pride around the Albirrojo.
The New York screening
The screening in New York is supported and promoted by the Consulate General of Paraguay in New York. The Consulate invited members of the Paraguayan community to attend wearing national team shirts and carrying Paraguayan flags. Following New York, the film will continue to Madrid, where it is due to premiere on 21 May at the historic Palacio de la Prensa cinema on Gran Vía.
Ahead of the screening, Times Square billboards featured red, white, and blue tones as part of the film’s promotional campaign. The New York Consulate of Paraguay described it as a tribute to the garra guaraní (the fighting spirit associated with Paraguayan football). The event also coincided with Paraguay’s Independence Day celebrations.
The Argentina screening
The documentary’s international tour began with a screening at the Gaumont Cinema in Buenos Aires on 13 May 2026, supported by the Paraguayan Embassy in Argentina and attended by Ambassador Helena Felip. Producers described the event as part of a broader effort to strengthen media and cultural ties between Paraguay and Argentina. The premiere follows a recent strategic alliance for film coproduction between Paraguay’s National Audiovisual Institute (INAP) and Argentina’s National Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts (INCAA).
Major production effort
Filming began in August 2025 following an initiative led by the Paraguayan Football Association (APF) alongside 23 Sports Marketing. The Albirrojo Rebirth involved an extensive technical operation during Paraguay’s decisive World Cup qualifying match against Ecuador. With around 11 simultaneous filming units, more than 10 camera operators, and eight drone teams capturing scenes across several cities.
Production took place in Asunción, Luque, Areguá, Lambaré, Fernando de la Mora, and Capitán Bado. As well as at the Estadio Defensores del Chaco, the CARDE sports complex in Ypané, and the Women’s High-Performance Football Centre. Post-production included detailed editing, original music composition, sound design, and colour grading aimed at creating what producers described as an immersive emotional experience.
Symbol of national identity
The Albirrojo Rebirth has also received Country Brand certification from Rediex and Paraguay’s Ministry of Industry and Commerce. This was done in recognition of its contribution to promoting Paraguayan identity internationally. According to the filmmakers, the international screenings are intended not only to expand the reach of Paraguayan cinema but also to reconnect Paraguayans living abroad.
The 78-minute film first premiered on 20 April 2026 and continues to draw attention both for its sporting narrative and for its portrayal of resilience, belonging, and national pride.
