The Municipality of Jerusalem has announced its decision to designate one of its public squares with the name “Paraguay” in a gesture of friendship and respect. The decision was communicated by the Mayor of Jerusalem, Moshé León, who emphasised that the move is a tribute to the close ties between the Republic of Paraguay and the State of Israel.
This formal act of recognition, according to Mayor Léon, serves as a public and lasting testament to the diplomatic solidarity that defines their partnership on the international stage.
“A symbol of steadfast support”
The naming of this public space also functions as a direct acknowledgement of Paraguay’s firm support for Israel’s right to defend its sovereignty and security. According to Paraguayan state media, “it specifically recognises the South American nation’s backing of Israel’s efforts to protect its population from threats and attacks perpetrated by organisations described as terrorist groups”. This support has been a cornerstone of the bilateral relationship, fostering a deep sense of trust and alliance.
In a meeting to inform the Paraguayan Ambassador, Alejandro Rubín, of the decision, Mayor León elaborated on the city’s motivations. The discussion highlighted the importance of such gestures in strengthening international friendships and ensuring they remain visible to the public. The future “Paraguay Square” will therefore serve as a permanent reminder of this valued connection within the urban landscape of Jerusalem.

During his statement, Mayor León offered high praise for Paraguay, describing the country’s supportive stance in powerful terms. He underscored the value Israel places on its relationship with the nation, noting its importance in a complex geopolitical environment.
León stated that Paraguay has proven itself to be a uniquely courageous partner for Israel, and emphasised that the country has proven to be “an unparalleled and courageous ally,” not only for its political support of the State of Israel, but also for decisions considered historic in strengthening relations between the two nations.

The act of naming a public space after a country is a profound diplomatic custom. Over 140 years ago, Paraguay renamed a square in the historic centre of its capital Asunción Plaza Uruguaya.
