Each week, Tommy-Maurice is going to a different restaurant in Asunción. This week, he has been to Palapa Food, an establishment located in the Barrio San Pablo.
Last weekend, I attended a meeting of the Expats in Paraguay held at Palapa Food. This group of foreigners is getting together once a month in a restaurant in Asunción. Meetups can have between 30 and 60 people, depending on the season and the temperature. The establishment was recommended to everyone by one of the group’s administrators, John, and let us say he was not wrong! It is a lovely, little, family-friendly eatery in Barrio San Pablo, in the southern part of the capital. It is an ineluctable food stop. Go there, you will not regret it!
Palapa Food serves hamburgers, lomitos, pizzas, platters you can share, fries, beers, and drinks. Like most of the people at the get-together, I took a hamburger, the Full Doble Bacon, which contains two patties of ground beef, bacon, and a bit of cheese. I ate it with a regular fries and a very big cola. The main dish was excellent, tasty, flavourful, and well-cooked, while the side dish was crunchy. Everyone I talked to liked their burger and fries; some even ordered a second time. Those who ate the pizza or the lomitos also enjoyed their meals, saying how tasty it was. I will have to come back to test the rest of the menu!
When I arrived at Palapa Food, it was the end of the Sudamericana football game, the Argentinian team winning 3-1 against the Brazilian one. It was packed inside, and everyone was having fun. The backyard was reserved for us, having enough places for everyone. There are enough places for 60 to 70 people in the back, sufficient for all the events you might want to organize there. It is very family-friendly, with a little playground in the back corner for your children if you have any. Some lovely little decorations made the space more beautiful and intimate. The staff of the eatery is also friendly and family-oriented. It puts us in a comfortable setting to eat some of the best food in San Pablo! The establishment is also spotless and well-maintained. It demonstrates how they care about their restaurant and their clients. They show you a lot of respect.
The prices at Palapa Food are excellent. My burger, the fries, and 1.5 litres of cola cost me 48K Guaraníes, slightly over 6 American dollars, or under 6 euros. The hamburger was priced at 26K, just over 3 American dollars and euros. The beer is affordable, the small chop being at 5K Guaraníes, which is not even a dollar, and the bigger one being at 10K. They also have a 3-litre tower of Munich that you can get for 45K Guaraníes, which means 1 litre costs you 15K. It is great if you want to share and drink beverages with friends! Luckily for everyone, payments can be made with cards and cash.
One great thing is that Palapa Food has a dedicated parking space just in front of the establishment. If it is already full, other streets in the area have good parking spots. The restaurant is located in Barrio San Pablo, in the southern area of Asunción. You probably arrive from the north, potentially on República Argentina. From that avenue, turn left on Eusebio Ayala. At the corner of La Victoria, turn right in the opposite direction of the Los Laureles Food Park. If you come from R.I. 18 Pitiantuta, continue on that street, which changes names passing Ayala. The restaurant is three corners south. Being on a big street, it is easily accessible and easier to reach for someone new to Asunción and Paraguay. You can take Bolt or Uber if you do not want to drive. Since it is easy to get to, it should not cost much. Ultimately, if you want to walk to the place, it is very safe compared to other areas of the capital. It is not open on Mondays but from 5 PM to 1 AM from Tuesday to Sunday. If you think you will be there with a big group, you should send them a private message via Palapa Food on Instagram to reserve the backyard area.
