A red card shown to Paraguay’s Miguel Almirón during the 2026 World Cup has been turned into a viral song. “Red Card”, the single by German DJ Tiscore, has been streamed and shared across social media by fans in Paraguay and beyond. In an interview with The Asunción Times, Tiscore explains that the track began as a joke made for social media, never intended to become an international hit.
From red card to dance floor
Almirón, who plays for Paraguay’s national team, was sent off during Paraguay’s 2026 World Cup match against Türkiye. The decision came after covering his mouth while exchanging words with Turkish player Mert Müldür. The Salvadoran referee, Iván Barton, explained the decision on camera, a moment that was widely shared on TikTok because of his distinctive voice.
Tiscore came across the clip late one night, shortly before going to bed. “The referee sounds like some of the techno MC guys shouting phrases over dance music. I should add a beat there,” the German DJ, whose full name is Timon Schaper, recalled thinking. By the next morning, he was in the studio, and it took him about ten minutes to put together a 15-second clip built around the referee’s words.
“To be honest, I did not really put much effort into it,” Tiscore admits. “It was just meant to be a quick, fun video for social media.”

How DJ Tiscore’s “Red Card” reached Paraguay
Tiscore, who had not watched the Paraguay-Türkiye match live, said he only encountered the referee’s viral clip afterwards on TikTok. The early stage of the World Cup featured several matches a day. Some were played in the middle of the night in his time zone in Germany, which made it difficult to follow every game.
Tiscore says he was entirely unprepared for the reaction. “I never expected the song to become popular at all. I did not think it was going to blow up worldwide. The feedback has been massive, and I got messages from people all over the world. It was a big surprise.”
The song opens with the voice of Iván Barton declaring, “This is your referee speaking, and I want you to listen. If you break my rules, you will be punished. I am the boss on the field and on the dance floor.” It then repeats the phrase used at the moment of the sending-off: “After review, number 10, Paraguay covered his mouth. Decision is: red card,” before the beat kicks in.
DJ Tiscores’s “Red Card” has two versions: a shorter one lasting 1 minute 55 seconds, and an extended version of 2 minutes 52 seconds. In a separate post on Instagram, Tiscore said Barton’s voice reminded him of “a clandestine rave at four in the morning.”
Paraguay’s reaction
What began as a fifteen-second joke turned into a moment of celebration for many Paraguayans. Tiscore singled out one reaction as his favourite. “I loved to watch the videos I got from Paraguayan people partying to the song and celebrating it. It really showed the song coming truly alive. The thousands of clips and comments posted on TikTok also brought me joy.”
The preview clip that introduced the song on Instagram had already gathered more than 700,000 likes, and the track had reached close to 960,000 plays on Spotify within days of its release.
Tiscore’s message to Paraguayan fans
Tiscore is based in Berlin and has previously worked with international artists such as Timmy Trumpet and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike. His productions have amassed more than 300 million streams worldwide. He has also performed at festivals including Airbeat One and Ruhr In Love.
Despite that experience, he says the response from Paraguay stood out. “I want to thank everyone from Paraguay for the lovely support on the whole story and the song. It has been some crazy weeks, and you are part of it. This shows the incredible impact that sports and music can have, and how social media, at its best, can create extraordinary stories that bring people together.”
