Paraguay completes first carrot export to the Argentine market

Earlier today, 25,000 kilos of Paraguayan carrots were shipped to the Argentine market, the first shipment of this vegetable product to be exported, which until now was intended to meet the demand of local market consumption.

The first shipment of carrots for the Argentine market marks a milestone for this sector, which is the only one capable of supplying the domestic market throughout the year, said Leticia Soria, director of Quality and Safety of the National Service for Vegetable and Seed Quality (Senave).

The shipment of 25,000 kilos is possible thanks to the efforts of the National Government and the support of the Investment and Export Network (Rediex), which put buyers in Buenos Aires and producers in the department of Itapúa in contact.

“There is a shortage of this product in Buenos Aires. Products of Brazilian origin were entering the country, but through negotiations they decided to acquire Paraguayan production. Only two weeks ago the interested parties were contacted and the deal was finalised,” explained Soria in communication with the state media.

He indicated that carrots are a product typically produced in the department of Itapúa, where most of the products consumed in the Paraguayan market come from, and that in this first export shipment, three cooperative producers are responsible for the shipment.

Soria stressed that Senave has no record of exports in the carrot sector, but that national production has sufficient volume and the opportunity to reach other markets.

“Senave aims to export products that are generally from family agriculture. We are typically grain exporters, but the focus now is on exporting fruit and vegetable products. We have the conditions and quality, it is a matter of closing deals based on price,” said the director of Senave.

In this regard, he mentioned the promotion and markets gained for the banana sector during the current administration.

He also pointed out Senave’s intention to promote onion exports, another sector in which there is a high level of quality in production. To this end, work is also being done with Rediex to establish contact and ensure all phytosanitary conditions for export.
