Over the past 10 years, Paraguay’s maquila sector has experienced exponential growth. This change includes both export volume and the arrival of new companies operating under this regime. Consequently, this development has led the sector to reach record-high export figures, bringing the sector’s cumulative exports for 2026 already over US$1 billion. The maquila sector has achieved a growth rate of 26% so far in 2026.
According to the Ministry of Industry and Commerce (MIC), the maquila sector accounts for 69% of industrial exports. Furthermore, the sector has also created 40,000 jobs, according to Javier Viveros, Viceminister of Industry at MIC.
For instance, in August 2026, maquila companies set a new monthly record. They exported approximately US$150 million, bringing the sector’s cumulative exports to US$1.01 billion. This strong performance contributes to Paraguay’s growing economy through increased exports, job creation and stronger industrial activity. In addition, the growth makes Paraguay more attractive to investors. Consequently, future business projects and further expansion in the maquila sector could increase.
The pursuit of market diversification
Brazil remains one of the main destinations for Paraguayan products manufactured under the maquila regime. Meanwhile, Mercosur countries receive 77% of total maquila exports. Investors find Paraguay’s proximity to Brazil and Argentina particularly attractive. In addition, companies benefit from the country’s competitive cost structure.
Companies operating under this regime also export to the United States, the Netherlands, Bolivia, Chile and Uruguay, among other markets. These exports include auto parts, clothing, aluminium, food products and plastics. Meanwhile, chemical and pharmaceutical products, as well as pet food, represent a smaller share of exports. This broad market reach strengthens Paraguay’s position as an increasingly attractive manufacturing and export industry.
How Paraguayan industry drives new opportunities for growth
Diego Peirat, Executive Secretary of the National Council of Maquiladora Export Industries (CNIME), highlighted the dynamism of the maquila sector. According to Peirat, this not only translates into higher exports, but also creates jobs and boosts economic activity.
“The maquila regime really does encourage many people to decide once and for all to come to Paraguay, settle here and take advantage of the competitive advantages we have.”
According to Peirat, the growth of the maquila sector confirms the great potential of the Paraguayan industry. Furthermore, Paraguay continues to pursue further growth in the industrial and export sectors. The country is seeking to enter more markets and attract more international investors. As a result, the maquila sector continues to contribute to Paraguay’s economic growth.
