Seeking to simplify that process, Paraguayan entrepreneur Ana Merlo has launched FellowBridge, an artificial intelligence-powered platform connecting users with opportunities suited to their academic background and ambitions.
Merlo, originally from the Paraguayan city of Pedro Juan Caballero, developed the idea after experiencing the scholarship application process herself while pursuing postgraduate studies in the United States. Through a Fulbright–BECAL scholarship, she completed a Master’s degree in Business Analytics at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, specialising in Artificial Intelligence and Marketing Analytics. Consequently, she recognised that many talented students miss valuable opportunities simply because reliable information remains difficult to access.
A smarter way to search
Rather than operating as a conventional scholarship directory, FellowBridge analyses each user’s profile before recommending opportunities that closely match their qualifications and eligibility. After creating an account, users provide details including their nationality, educational background, field of study and professional interests. The platform then suggests scholarships, fellowships, exchange programmes, research positions and leadership initiatives that correspond with those criteria.
The personalised approach aims to eliminate much of the uncertainty surrounding scholarship searches. Instead of manually reviewing hundreds of listings, applicants receive recommendations filtered according to their academic profile and nationality. As a result, users can dedicate more time to preparing competitive applications rather than searching for suitable opportunities.
Beyond a scholarship database
FellowBridge currently features more than 500 international opportunities from universities, foundations and organisations across several countries. Users can browse the database, create personalised profiles and receive AI-powered recommendations without paying for the platform’s core services. Meanwhile, the company is continuing to expand both its database and its range of educational opportunities.
The platform is also developing a mentorship network designed to connect applicants with individuals who have successfully secured prestigious international scholarships and fellowships. These mentors will provide guidance on application essays, interviews and other stages of the selection process through premium services. Moreover, the founders believe personalised advice can significantly improve applicants’ confidence throughout an often competitive process.
Built by an international team
Ana Merlo co-founded FellowBridge alongside Antonela Tamagnini of Argentina and Dan Nguyen of Vietnam, combining expertise in artificial intelligence, computer science and data science. Together, the team aims to build technology that removes barriers preventing students from accessing international educational opportunities.
The start-up has also been selected for Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s GOAT Impact Accelerator, where it has received mentorship and support to further develop the platform. This recognition reflects growing interest in educational technology that combines artificial intelligence with practical guidance for aspiring students.
Expanding access to education
For Merlo, FellowBridge represents more than a technology venture. She has explained that scholarships transformed the educational opportunities available to her own family, inspiring her to help others pursue similar pathways. Therefore, the platform seeks not only to simplify scholarship searches but also to encourage greater participation in international education.
As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into education, platforms such as FellowBridge demonstrate how technology can reduce barriers instead of creating additional complexity. Although premium mentoring services are expected to expand over time, the platform’s core features, including AI-powered recommendations and scholarship discovery, remain available free of charge.
