A new exhibition at the National Archives of Asunción is offering visitors a journey through more than 150 years of Paraguay’s constitutional history. Titled Four Times of the Republic: The Constitutions of Paraguay, the exhibition opened on 22 June 2026 as part of activities marking the National Day of the Constitution. The date commemorates the adoption of Paraguay’s current Constitution, which was enacted in 1992 and is recognised through Law No. 7544.
Presented by the National Secretariat of Culture, the exhibition examines the country’s four constitutional eras with original documents, historical photographs, publications, and archival materials. The display is open to the public free of charge.
Paraguay’s constitutional development
The exhibition presents Paraguay’s constitutions as legal, political, and historical documents that reflect different periods of the nation’s institutional development. Visitors can explore the Constitution of 1870, adopted during the reconstruction period following the War of the Triple Alliance. The exhibition also examines the Constitution of 1940, which is associated with a stronger and more centralised state structure.
Another section focuses on the Constitution of 1967, created during a period marked by a prolonged concentration of political power. The final section is dedicated to the 1992 Constitution, which emerged following Paraguay’s democratic transition and remains in force today.
The exhibition is organised into four thematic areas, one for each constitution. Original constitutional documents are displayed alongside enlarged graphic reproductions, historical photographs, portraits, signatures, and official seals. According to organisers, the objective is to make historical records more accessible and to encourage public reflection on the evolution of Paraguay’s institutions.
Preserving documentary heritage
The exhibition forms part of the National Secretariat of Culture’s efforts to preserve, research, and promote Paraguay’s documentary heritage. Materials on display have been drawn from collections preserved by the National Archives of Asunción.
The exhibition is located at the National Archives of Asunción, on the corner of Mariscal Estigarribia and Iturbe. It can be visited from Monday to Friday between 07:00 and 19:00, and on Saturdays from 11:00 to 20:00. Admission is free, allowing visitors to explore key moments in Paraguay’s constitutional history through documents that are rarely accessible to the general public.
