The National Institute of Paraguayan Audiovisual (INAP) has officially announced the launch of its second annual National Award for Cinematographic and Audiovisual Research. The Paraguayan Film Research Award initiative aims to stimulate academic study and critical analysis of Paraguay’s film and audiovisual sector. A substantial main prize of ₲10,000,000 (approximately US$1,650) will be awarded to the winning submission.
The application period for the award officially opened on 11 May, 2026, and runs until 07:59 on 30 October, 2026. The competition seeks to foster a deeper understanding of the Paraguay’s cinematic heritage and its contemporary landscape. This call for entries represents a continued commitment by the institute to develop a robust body of scholarly work dedicated to national media.
Fostering academic inquiry into national cinema
According to INAP, the primary goal of this Paraguayan Film Research Award second edition is to strengthen the generation of knowledge within the field. The award is designed to encourage fresh analytical perspectives on the Paraguayan film industry. Furthermore, it plays a crucial role in preserving the country’s audiovisual memory for future generations.
By supporting rigorous research, the institute hopes to build a comprehensive archive of academic material that explores the cultural, social, and historical significance of Paraguayan cinema. This effort is seen as essential for the continued growth and recognition of the national audiovisual industry on both a local and international stage.
The competition is open to a diverse range of applicants to ensure a wide spectrum of research is considered. Independent researchers, established academics, and professionals currently working within the audiovisual sector are all encouraged to submit their work. Additionally, the call extends to both undergraduate and postgraduate students, providing an important platform for emerging scholars to contribute to the discourse. .
Submission guidelines and eligibility
Submissions must be presented in the format of a scientific article, demonstrating methodological rigor and citing verifiable sources. All works must be original and can be either unpublished or previously published, provided they have been updated since 1 January 2018.
The central focus of the research must relate to Paraguayan cinematography and audiovisuals. This includes explorations of its connections with other academic disciplines. To accommodate the nation’s linguistic heritage, articles may be written in either Spanish or Guarani.
Prospective candidates are required to complete the official INAP application form. Along with the form, several key documents must be attached for the submission to be considered complete. These include a valid registration of copyright for the work, a detailed description of the research project, and the full article itself.
Timeline for applications and awards
The Paraguayan Film Research Award application period for the award officially opened on 11 May. Hopefuls have until 07:59 on 30 October 2026 to submit their research projects for consideration. Following the closing date, a technical evaluation of all submitted works will be conducted from 2 to 6 November. A panel of jurors will then carry out the final selection process, with their decision scheduled for 7 December. The initiative will culminate in a formal award ceremony, which is planned to take place on 14 December 2026.
The researcher behind the winning submission will receive the grand prize of ₲10,000,000 and a commemorative plaque to mark their achievement. In addition to the main award, the jury has the discretion to grant up to three special recognitions. These will be awarded as certificates to projects that demonstrate exceptional quality or offer unique insights, based on their specific themes.
