Asunción Bus Station Prepares for 150,000 Travellers During Holy Week

The Asunción bus station is preparing for approximately 150,000 travellers through its facilities over the coming days as part of its annual Holy Week 2026 operation. The director of the station, Lourdes Ucedo, confirmed the preparations and noted that the busiest period is expected to commence this week. She stated that the special measures were initiated last Friday to manage the significant increase in passenger numbers.

In a statement, Ucedo detailed the expectations for the travel surge. The operational plan anticipates that the 150,000 travellers will be journeying to various destinations both within Paraguay and internationally. Holy Week, known as Semana Santa, is one of the most significant travel periods in the country, with many people returning to their hometowns to visit family or taking short holidays.

A surge in passenger numbers is anticipated

The director specifically highlighted the expected timeline for the increase in activity at the terminal. The operation is designed to manage a steady build-up of passengers throughout the week, culminating in the busiest days just before the main religious holidays.

“The high peak of movement begins this Monday,” Ucedo stated. This statement underscores the readiness of the terminal staff and partner agencies to handle the logistical challenges associated with such a large volume of people. The preparations are crucial for ensuring a smooth and orderly flow of passengers through the station’s gates and onto their respective services.

Increased services to meet travellers demand

To accommodate the heightened demand, a key measure will be implemented from the middle of the week. By order of the National Directorate of Transport, bus departure times are set to be liberalised from midday on Wednesday. This change will permit a greater frequency of journeys, allowing bus companies to dispatch vehicles as they become available and as passenger demand dictates.

This flexible scheduling allows transport providers to respond dynamically to the number of travellers present at the station, thereby reducing waiting times and preventing overcrowding in the terminal. Consequently, this adjustment aims to ensure that everyone seeking to travel can find a service without significant delays, which is essential during peak holiday periods.

Enhanced security measures are in place

Alongside the logistical adjustments, there is a significant focus on public safety. Ucedo highlighted that the operation includes enhanced support from the National Police and the National Anti-Drug Secretariat (SENAD). These security bodies have deployed a considerable number of agents to conduct thorough safety checks.

The increased security presence is a preventative measure designed to ensure the safety of all travellers. Agents will be active both within the main station building and in the surrounding areas. Their duties include monitoring passenger flow, inspecting luggage where necessary, and maintaining a visible presence to deter any illicit activities, ensuring a secure environment for families and individuals alike during this busy travel season.
