The Itaipu Binational Entity has announced the temporary closure of the Tekotopa Environmental Centre in Hernandarias. This decision follows a severe storm on 15 March 2026, which caused significant damage to parts of the facility’s infrastructure. Consequently, officials will communicate a future reopening date once restoration work is complete and the site is deemed safe for public access.
The extreme weather event occurred on Sunday afternoon, bringing with it strong winds and intense rainfall. As a result of the storm’s severity, the environmental centre sustained considerable damage. The powerful gusts felled numerous trees and compromised various structures throughout the complex.
Assessment of damage after temporary closure
In the immediate aftermath of the storm, the Itaipu Binational Entity dispatched a specialised technical team to the site. Their primary task is to conduct a thorough evaluation and ascertain the full magnitude of the damage. Currently, these professionals are carrying out a detailed survey across several strategic points within the centre to catalogue all necessary repairs.
The Superintendence of Environmental Management confirmed that the temporary closure is a necessary precaution. Specifically, the popular Jaguareté Trail, or Sendero del Jaguareté, has been closed to all visitors.
