The Argentine play Subacuática (Underwater) is coming to Paraguay. Unlike conventional plays, the piece will not take place in a regular theatre. The performance takes place entirely in a swimming pool, in this case, the swimming pool of the Armed Forces Physical Education School in Asunción. Subacuática will have a total of six performances in Paraguay. Starting 28 February to mid-March, visitors and residents will have the chance to see a one-of-a-kind performance at the physical education school.
Submerged in emotion
The play’s unique setting provides viewers with an authentic experience. Each breaststroke and splash of the characters becomes an emotional journey. Visitors are wrapped in the deep blue and aquatic atmosphere. This innovative stage setting allows the narrative to develop in an intimate and personal way. Exploring themes of grief, love, and resilience, this performance is truly extraordinary.
Subacuática is based on the book of the same name, written by Argentine author Melina Pogorelsky. The book describes the unhinged stage in the life of Pablo, a widower and first-time father. “It is a challenge and a pleasure to work with this adaptation. I could not fit it into one specific genre. We are surpassing them all,” says director Fátima Fernández Centurión about the creative process.
The play stars only four actors: Lali González, Andrea Quattrocchi, Ato Gómez, and Guadalupe Lobo, creating an even more intimate setting. The first season of the play premiered in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 2024. After its huge success with the Argentine public, the piece established itself as a staple in unconventional theatre in 2025.
Get your tickets!
To preserve the adaptation’s air of intimacy and directness, tickets are limited. However, the FFAA will open its doors multiple times from the end of February to mid-March. Subacuática’s premiere will be on 28 February at 19:30 at the swimming pool of the Armed Forces Physical Education School located on General Santos Avenue, Asunción.
This cultural proposal invites the audience to immerse themselves in a different sensorial experience. Water is not only a stage, but an active element in the story. Throughout the play, the audience, alongside the characters, goes through emotional journeys marked by fear, desire, and personal obstacles.
