Direct Flights To The U.S. Could Return As Paraguay’s Airport Receives TSA Clearance

Paraguay’s Airport Silvio Pettirossi International takes a major step towards expanding Paraguay’s global connectivity. After receiving official authorisation from the United States government, the airport is expected to welcome direct flights from the U.S. The approval strengthens Asunción’s position as a growing regional hub and raises expectations for the return of long-awaited international routes.

Among the connections that could soon be reactivated, the direct route to Miami stands out as a strategic link for tourism, business, and cargo operations. For passengers, this development promises shorter travel times and improved access to North American markets. At the same time, airlines gain new operational opportunities in a market showing steady demand growth.

The authorisation follows a comprehensive security audit carried out by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) at Paraguay’s main airport terminal, located in the city of Luque, near Asunción. The inspection evaluated infrastructure, control systems, screening equipment, and the certification of airport security personnel. According to officials, all required international standards were successfully met.

International aviation standards

Rubén Aguilar, Director of Airports at the National Directorate of Civil Aeronautics (DINAC), confirms that the technical assessment achieved a positive result. He explains that this certification is mandatory for any country where US-flag carriers plan to launch or resume commercial operations.

“The TSA verifies whether international regulations are fulfilled and whether the airport has the operational capacity to guarantee safe flights,” Aguilar states. He adds that the process ensures consistent safety protocols across borders and strengthens passenger confidence.

Several airlines, including American Airlines, have already expressed interest in restoring direct services to Paraguay. If negotiations progress smoothly, flight schedules and route announcements are expected to follow in the coming months. This potential expansion is expected to stimulate tourism inflows, encourage foreign investment, and facilitate business travel.

Confidence in Paraguay’s aviation sector

The United States Embassy in Paraguay also confirms that Silvio Pettirossi Airport meets all required conditions. With this, the Embassy formally endorses the audit’s positive outcome. This backing sends a strong signal to international carriers evaluating new routes in South America.

Moreover, aviation analysts note that improved connectivity often triggers broader economic benefits, including job creation, growth in hospitality, and stronger trade links. As passenger demand continues to recover regionally, Asunción positions itself competitively within the Southern Cone.
