Paraguay has once more claimed the spotlight on the global culinary stage, with team BBQ Paraguay securing three medals at the 2025 Intercontinental Barbecue Tournament in Viña del Mar, Chile, cementing the nation’s reputation among the world’s elite barbecue nations.
Three medals in fierce international competition
The Paraguayan squad excelled among 80 teams from 40 countries, taking home an impressive haul in one of the most rigorous events on the international barbecue calendar.
- First place in the Vegetarian category;
- Second place in the General classification;
- Second place in the Rabbit category.
The triumph highlights Paraguay’s versatility and mastery across diverse grilling disciplines, from plant-based creations to specialised meat preparations.
A journey of passion and determination
Together with Barbakuá, another Paraguayan national barbecue team, the Guarani representatives traveled more than 2,000 kilometers by land to experience two days of technique, skill and pure grilling passion. The long journey to the 2025 Intercontinental Barbecue Tournament underscored the dedication of Paraguay’s barbecue ambassadors as they represented their country on South American soil.
Minister hails boost to gastronomic tourism
Angie Duarte, Paraguay’s Minister of Tourism, hailed the victory as a milestone for the nation’s international image. “This victory positions Paraguay as a leader in gastronomic tourism,” Duarte said. “Our teams demonstrated that tradition and innovation can coexist on the grill, taking our culinary culture to a global stage.”
The achievement is expected to further elevate Paraguay’s growing appeal as a destination for food-focused travellers.
Building on a strong track record
Team BBQ Paraguay’s latest success adds to an already distinguished record. Earlier in 2025, at a major competition in Uruguay, the team claimed gold in the Pork category, alongside fifth place in Fish and seventh overall.
With these latest medals, Paraguay solidifies its place among the global barbecue elite. The country’s distinctive grilling heritage, blending time-honoured Guarani techniques with contemporary flair, continues to captivate judges and enthusiasts alike.
