Fulgencio Yegros, a historic district in the Paraguayan department of Caazapá, is set to welcome visitors to the latest edition of its renowned Liquor Festival on 27 and 28 September 2025 at the Plaza Central in Yegros. This cherished event, a cornerstone of the city’s cultural calendar, celebrates the region’s rich heritage through a blend of artisanal cuisine, traditional liqueurs, and lively entertainment.
Founded on 17 December 1891, Fulgencio Yegros holds the distinction of being Paraguay’s first planned city, designed with a distinctive grid layout intersected by two diagonals. Named after independence hero Fulgencio Yegros, widely regarded as a “father of the nation,” the city embodies a progressive and multicultural spirit.
Its early settlers, hailing from 13 nationalities including Swiss, German, French, Belgian, and American, brought agricultural and artisanal expertise that continues to shape the city’s cultural identity, particularly in its cuisine and the crafting of artisanal wines and spirits.
A celebration of heritage and flavour
Since its inception in 2009, the Liquor Festival has solidified Fulgencio Yegros’ reputation as the “Liquor Capital” of Paraguay. Officially recognised as an event of national cultural and artistic interest, the festival serves as a vital platform for promoting tourism and preserving local traditions, and draws visitors from across the country.
The festival showcases over 30 varieties of artisanal liqueurs, crafted from traditional fruits such as orange, pineapple, and kiwi, alongside innovative blends featuring chocolate, coconut, mint, yerba mate, and even egg. A standout is the pacurí liqueur, derived from a fruit native to the Pirapó River region, symbolising the deep connection between the land and its produce.
Complementing the liqueurs are local wines, artisanal sausages, homemade sweets, and traditional dishes, including spit-roasted meats and regional chorizos, offering a comprehensive taste of the region’s gastronomic heritage. In Asunción this same weekend you can experience Paraguay’s living traditions at Expo Cultura En Red 2025.
A cultural extravaganza for all
The Liquor Festival promises a rich cultural and artistic programme designed to appeal to all ages. The main stage will host performances by dance groups and Paraguayan folk musicians, alongside celebrated bands such as Chiche Muriel, Cumbre Bohemia, and K-chiporros. DJs will energise the evenings.
A highlight of the event is the Miss Yegros 2025 contest, adding to the celebratory spirit. This diverse offering bridges generational divides, engaging older attendees with cultural traditions and younger visitors with modern entertainment. The festival’s inclusive approach ensures its continued relevance and sustainability, making it a cherished annual tradition.
