Every 21 September, Paraguay celebrates Youth Day alongside the arrival of spring. This date highlights young people as its central figures, while also paying tribute to the renewal of nature and the season of flowers. It reflects a clear connection between human development and the symbolism of spring, representing life, energy, and rebirth.
In Paraguay, Youth Day has been officially commemorated since the passage of Law No. 4882, enacted in 2013. This law established September 21 as the national date of celebration. Since then, every spring, the entire country comes alive with joy to celebrate its youth and welcome the new season. These days are characterised by a unique atmosphere of music, friendship, and hope, making 21 September one of the most eagerly anticipated dates on the national calendar.
The spirit of youth and spring
21 September captures the very essence of youth. For Paraguayan society, young people represent energy, freedom, and hope. They are the ones who drive change, bring fresh ideas, and shape the country’s future. The connection between youth and spring is no coincidence, as both symbolise growth, renewal, and vitality.
This day, therefore, is not only about celebration but also about recognising the crucial role young people play in building a more inclusive, dynamic, and opportunity-filled society. At the same time, it serves as a reminder to young people of the responsibility each carries in shaping the future of the nation.

Celebrations across the country
In Paraguay, 21 September is a highly anticipated date. The day is celebrated in style in schools, universities, streets, squares, and even in businesses. It is an opportunity for many to honour new beginnings and come together in celebration.
Educational institutions organise festivals, concerts, and cultural performances, as well as sports tournaments and artistic competitions. In these spaces, young people have the opportunity to spend time with friends, strengthen values, and showcase their talent and contribution to society.
At the same time, the streets are filled with youthful energy. Common gathering points include plazas, the Costanera in Asunción, and, of course, the city centre. Even local businesses join in the festivities, offering activities and special promotions designed to honour this significant celebration.
Youth population in Paraguay

The National Institute of Statistics (INE) released data on the youth population (aged 15 to 29) on 12 August, in observance of International Youth Day. The information is based on the annual results of the Continuous Household Survey (EPHC) 2024.
It is estimated that Paraguay’s total population (excluding the departments of Boquerón and Alto Paraguay, indigenous communities, and collective housing) reached around 5.9 million people in 2024. Of these, 25.4% are young people, approximately 1.5 million individuals aged 15 to 29.
These figures highlight the importance of young people in Paraguayan society and their central role in social change and the shaping of the country’s future.
