Encarnación’s Sacred Sites Set For Major Investment Boost

Itapúa is poised to become a leading religious tourism destination with a Gs. 270,000,000 (approximately US$34,000) investment to revitalise its iconic sacred sites, showcasing the Southern region’s rich spiritual heritage and historic Jesuit Missions. During a recent government visit to Encarnación, Angie Duarte, Minister of the National Secretariat of Tourism (Senatur), announced the funding. The investment will enhance key religious landmarks, boosting the region’s cultural and spiritual appeal.

Attracting thousands of pilgrims and visitors

The funds, managed by the Chamber of Tourism of the Jesuit Route, will focus on upgrading the Church of Itacuá and the Sanctuary of the Virgin. Both sites are located in Encarnación, the capital city of the southern region. The initiative aims to restore and enhance these sites as central pillars of the region’s spiritual and cultural landscape.

The improvement plan for the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Itacuá includes modernising infrastructure to benefit the thousands of pilgrims and visitors who arrive each year.

Enhancing sacred sites

Planned upgrades feature a new climate control system, energy-efficient LED lighting along pilgrimage paths, accessible signage, and interactive maps with QR codes. The project will also introduce a new tourist stop, refurbish rest areas, and renovate sanitary facilities. All designed to enrich the spiritual and cultural experience for visitors.

Religious tourism potential

This region is renowned for housing the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Jesuit Missions of Santísima Trinidad del Paraná and Jesús de Tavarangue. Those are both celebrated for their historical and spiritual importance. This new investment not only preserves and enhances these sacred sites, but also creates a more comprehensive circuit for pilgrims and cultural travelers.

Religious tourism in the Southern region generates employment, supports local businesses, and promotes local traditions. By improving infrastructure and visitor services, the investment aims to attract more visitors and foster sustainable development.

A sustainable vision for the future

Senatur’s approach emphasizes sustainability and community involvement, ensuring that the benefits of tourism reach local residents while preserving the region’s rich heritage. The investment also aligns with broader efforts to modernize infrastructure, including plans to upgrade the local airport to international standards.

These initiatives position the Southern region to strengthen its status as a top religious tourism destination. Offering a unique blend of history, culture, and spiritual enrichment.
