Clinics Hospital Department in Asunción Earns Prestigious St. Jude Gold Centre Status

The Pediatric Hemato-Oncology Department of the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the National University of Asunción’s Hospital de Clínicas (FCMUNA) received a significant recognition. The FCMUNA was recognised as a Gold Centre by the world-renowned St. Jude Global Alliance, focussing on rapid and effective intervention to create the greatest chance of saving lives.

Professor Dr. Angélica Samudio, Department Head of the FCMUNA, emphasised that this recognition validates the tremendous effort and dedication of the entire team. The announcement was also attended by Professor Dr. Osmar Cuenca Torres, Dean of the UNA Faculty of Medical Sciences and Programme Director. Professors and physicians from the FCMUNA also attended the ceremony.

Golden Hour Protocol

The FCMUNA received this international recognition from St. Jude due to intensive work focused on the Golden Hour Protocol (GHP). The protocol implementation took three years.

The GHP corresponds to a critical period of time after a medical emergency. Whether an accident, the onset of a stroke, or fever in a cancer patient, in which rapid and effective intervention has the greatest chance of saving lives or preventing serious complications.

The programme ensures that pediatric patients with febrile neutropenia receive their antibiotics quickly and within a specific timeframe. The process included the development, implementation, and sustainability of this vital initiative.
