The Villa Hayes Regional Hospital has performed its first bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, marking a significant advancement in oncological diagnostics in the region. The procedure was carried out by Dr. Lidiane Andino, a haemato-oncologist at the hospital’s Comprehensive Oncology Service. This happened under the supervision of Dr. David Cabrera, the head of the department.
Aspiration and biopsy techniques
Bone marrow aspiration is a diagnostic technique that involves extracting cells or fluid from a tumour or lymph node, using a fine needle. This method helps determine the nature of an abnormal mass or confirm a cancer diagnosis. A bone marrow biopsy involves taking a sample of bone marrow to diagnose haematological diseases such as leukaemia, lymphoma, and other blood disorders.
Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy are critical tools in modern medicine. They offer insights into a wide range of hematological and oncological conditions. These procedures are typically performed by a hematologist or oncologist. The results are providing essential information for tailoring treatment plans, such as chemotherapy, targeted therapies, or bone marrow transplants.
