The Faculty of Medical Sciences at the National University of Asunción-Clinics Hospital (Hospital de Clínicas) paid tribute to those who, from the 19th century to the present day, have dedicated their lives to the care and health of Paraguayan children. On National Paediatrician’s Day on 10 September 2025 the Department of Paediatrics highlighted the significance of this profession. And remembered those who even sacrificed their lives in the service of their vocation.
One such individual, particularly mentioned, was Dr. Bartolomé Coronel, considered a martyr of Paraguayan paediatrics, who died during a plague epidemic while treating his patients. Paediatricians are responsible for providing comprehensive care to children from birth to adolescence.
A holistic approach to child care
Their role extends beyond scientific knowledge; it involves a human and close relationship with children and their families, built on trust and commitment. The Department of Paediatrics emphasised that paediatrics is one of the most demanding disciplines within the hospital. In the paediatric wards, there is no rest; paediatricians constantly work to safeguard the health of their patients.
Special recognition was given to resident doctors who work tirelessly to maintain care at the Hospital de Clínicas, showing courage and sacrifice, even during challenging times such as the recent pandemic. The department’s work goes beyond outpatient consultations, inpatient care and emergency services.
Training future paediatricians
The Department of Paediatrics also plays a pivotal role in training highly skilled paediatric specialists. The aim is to produce professionals committed to academic excellence, continuous learning, and compassionate care. These professionals are prepared to meet the needs of Paraguayan children with ethics, science, and a vocation for service.
The care system in the Ambulatory Paediatric Unit (UPA) ensures access to specialists and subspecialists, using an organised scheduling system and a 24-hour Paediatric Emergency Service. This demonstrates the Faculty’s commitment to comprehensive care for children.
On the commemorative date of National Paediatrician’s Day, the Department expressed its heartfelt tribute to all Paraguayan paediatricians, encouraging continued work with the same perseverance, dedication, and commitment that characterises this noble profession.
