British Foreign Minister in historic first visit to Asunción, Paraguay

David Cameron, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and current Foreign Minister, today made history by becoming the first ever serving UK Foreign Minister to visit Paraguay, despite diplomatic relations between the two countries stretching back over 171 years.

“I’m sorry it’s taken so long”, said Cameron.

After meeting with Paraguayan president Santiago Peña at the Lopez Palace in Asunción, Cameron participated in a media conference without questions, and talked about “the many opportunities to build a real solid association on shared values into the future, working jointly in environmental issues as well as addressing the many global problems”

President Santiago Peña and his foreign minister Ramirez Lezcano said that “this visit represents the strengthening of relations between our countries and an opportunity to advance in a raft of issues dear to the very close links we are building with the UK.”

The leaders highlighted Paraguay’s “significant contribution” towards efforts to decarbonise global energy production, as one of only two countries globally which runs the entire national grid solely on renewable energy, and discussed the need to increase bilateral trade.

Currently, Paraguay exports US$120 million worth of goods and services, with imports from the UK totalling US$65 million.
