A total of 28,800 kilos of onions were exported to the Argentine market last Friday, from the department of Boquerón. Thus, this item joined tomatoes and carrots, products of family agriculture, in the list of fruit and vegetable products exported from Paraguay to be sold beyond the domestic market.
This new milestone for agricultural production was celebrated at an event held at the Boreal Puerto Seco, near the border with the neighboring country, attended by the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), Dr. Carlos Giménez, the president of SENAVE, Agr. Eng. Pastor Soria Melo, other government authorities, as well as the Paraguayan producer and the Argentine importer.
The onion products exported from Paraguay consists of 1,600 bags of 18 kg each, and belongs to producer Gian Hiebert, from the Picada 500 area, Mcal. Estigarribia, of the aforementioned department.
Authorities celebrated this new achievement of Paraguayan farmers and praised the efforts of producers, importers and state institutions, in increasing the amount of products exported from Paraguay.
The head of Senave, Pastor Soria, indicated that it was always a desire to position national production beyond the local market and today it is becoming a reality. “This demonstrates the potential of Chaco production and the country. The commercialisation of family agriculture products abroad is being achieved and the export of bell peppers is also taking place. We will continue working on improving the quality of production,” he said.
For his part, the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Dr. Carlos Gimenez, said that this export relieves the pressure on the local market, and stressed that they are seeking to conquer markets in order to project production for the entire year and be competitive with products exported from Paraguay.
The producer Gian Hiebert thanked the support of the institutions and said he was proud to be able to achieve this export, hoping that it will be the first of many that he can achieve. “This is a source of pride for me and my family, we appreciate the willingness of the technicians who supported us and it is also a very big step for the country,” concluded the producer who has 70 hectares of production in the Paraguayan Chaco.
