Red, White And Woof! This Was Asunción’s Patriot Dog Parade

Asunción hosted a new edition of Patriot Dog parade (Jagua Patriota in Jopará, a mix of Guarani and Spanish languages). The parade took place in front of the National Pantheon of the Heroes on Palma Street. The event was held during Independence Day celebrations marking 215 years of Paraguay’s independence. Organisers, families, visitors, and pet owners gather in the historic centre to take part in a public parade. The activity combined national pride, community participation, and animal welfare in a historic and cultural space.

Patriot Dog parade: The centre of celebrations

The Patriot dog parade brought together dogs of all sizes, breeds, and colours as they walked alongside their owners through the microcentre. Participants dressed their pets in patriotic outfits inspired by the Paraguayan flag, using red, white, and blue costumes. The public filled the sidewalks of Palma Street as they watched closely, reacting with enthusiasm, taking photographs, and applauding each pet.

“This is my first time participating with Cuqui (her dog), and I think it is a very creative way to celebrate Independence Day with our pets,” says Ana León, a 34-year-old from Asunción. “Seeing so many dogs dressed in patriotic colours makes the event feel even more special.”

The competition includes several categories, such as the best patriotic costume, the best duo performance between owner and pet, the most charming or “juky” (in Guaraní) pet, and the most talented participant. Organisers awarded prizes including pet supplies, accessories, food, and professional photo sessions, creating a festive and engaging experience for participants.

Inclusion and rescue stories

Organisers and participants describe the Patriot Dog parade as an inclusive event that shows the bond between humans and animals. The parade includes rescued and adopted dogs, many of which previously lived in situations of abandonment. The presence of pets with disabilities, including dogs in wheelchairs, reinforces the message that participation and joy remain open to all animals.

“My dog was adopted, and this is our first time participating in the parade,” says Carlos Benítez, a 38-year-old from the city of San Lorenzo. “It is a nice way to spend the holiday and meet other people who love their pets.”

These moments turn the parade into more than entertainment, as it reflects care, responsibility, and companionship within the community.

A tradition that grows

The Patriot Dog parade began in 2016 when the creators of the mobile application PulgApp organised a small pet parade in the microcentre of Asunción. The idea grew over time and became part of the official Independence Day programme in the city. Each year, more participants register their pets through digital platforms and join the celebration.

Today, the event stands as one of the most recognisable activities of the national holiday programme in Asunción. It brings together tradition, creativity, and public participation while transforming Palma Street into a space of colour, emotion, and community spirit.
