Paraguay is preparing to celebrate the richness and diversity of the French language and culture as the Fiesta de la Francophonie returns to Asunción. The event is organised by the Embassy of France in Paraguay and the Alianza Francesa de Asunción. The initiative is part of the Semaine de la Langue Française et de la Francophonie and promises a full day of international art, music, cinema, and interactive experiences for the public.
The festival will take place on Saturday, 21 March, from 12:30 to 18:00, at the Alianza Francesa headquarters in Asunción (Mcal. Estigarribia 1039, between Brasil and Estados Unidos). Access is completely free, welcoming everyone from families and students to francophiles and curious visitors. The event is designed to immerse attendees in the vibrant cultures of French-speaking countries from all around the world.
A full day of activities
The Fiesta de la Francophonie offers a variety of activities for all ages. Food lovers can enjoy the International Gastronomy Fair, featuring dishes from the diverse francophone world. Music enthusiasts will be entertained by live performances from Nuez Amado, specialising in chanson française, and a DJ set by Gustavo Kwak that promises a lively atmosphere.
Film lovers will have the chance to explore francophone cinema through curated screenings throughout the day. Children can join interactive workshops such as “Ñanduti: ¿Quién podrá ayudar a Panambi?”, a collage and trilingual experience led by Norma Ortega, ensuring young visitors also enjoy a hands-on cultural experience on ñanduti. Meanwhile, technology enthusiasts can explore virtual reality experiences that transport them to new worlds. A special highlight is the comic exhibition “Histoire de France au Féminin”, celebrating the remarkable stories of women in French history.
The festival will also include the presentation of French language certificates. This is to recognise the achievements of local students in mastering the language.
Francophonie’s global impact
Globally, the Francophonie connects 348 million people across five continents, fostering collaboration in education, culture, politics, and the economy. Since 1970, the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie(OIF) has encouraged joint initiatives that promote linguistic diversity, peace, and human rights. Additionally, research cooperation among 90 member states and governments. Events like this in Paraguay highlight the importance of these global connections at a local level.
International participation
The 2026 Fiesta de la Francophonie is supported by the Institut Français de Paris. It also features active participation from the Consulate of Belgium, the Embassy of Canada in Argentina, and the Embassy of Switzerland in Uruguay. At the same time, with the Embassy of Austria in Argentina and the Embassy of Morocco. This collaboration ensures a truly international celebration of francophone heritage.
