On May 6, the Paraguayan Red Cross (La Cruz Roja Paraguaya) will hold its traditional fundraising event, La Fiesta de la Banderita, with a special twist this year: a celebration of Paraguayan culture through music. The evening promises a rich fusion of heritage and creativity, bringing together the heartfelt rhythms of Paraguayan folklore and the vibrant energy of jazz. The event based itself on the original Fiesta de la Banderita, organised by Spain Red Cross for more than 100 years.
La Fiesta de la Banderita: For A Good Cause
Proceeds from the event will support the humanitarian efforts of the Paraguayan Red Cross, which continues to play a vital role in the country by assisting vulnerable communities and responding to emergencies. Funds will also go towards maintaining the Hospital Materno Infantil Reina Sofía and the Espacio de Desarrollo Infantil Santa Ana, both located in Bañado Sur of Asunción.
Performers
This year’s La Fiesta de la Banderita will feature two iconic names in Paraguayan music: guitarist and folklorist Juan Cancio Barreto and singer Jorge Castro, both recognised for their contributions to the preservation and evolution of national music. Juan Cancio Barreto, with decades of experience and a distinctive style rooted in traditional Paraguayan guitar, has become a symbol of the country’s rich musical legacy. Jorge Castro brings a powerful voice and a deep emotional range that bridges classical folklore with contemporary expression. They will also be joined on stage by Sunú Experience, a dynamic jazz band known for its fresh sound and innovative arrangements that blend Latin American rhythms with modern jazz. Their performance promises to add a unique and unexpected layer to the event.
