Each week, Tommy-Maurice is going to a different restaurant in Asunción. This week, he has been to Cervecería Aurelia, a pub located in the Barrio Virgen del Huerto.
I was recently invited to a meetup organised at Cervecería Aurelia, also named Aurelia Brew Pub, in the quiet Barrio Virgen del Huerto. One of the owners is a long-time English expat in Paraguay, a volunteer firefighter here, and the premier administrator of the Facebook group “Expats in Paraguay.” I was very interested and curious to see the place for myself, which opened less than two years ago. If you have noticed, it is the second time I am going to a place owned by a foreigner – who have more considerable impacts in the country in the last couple of years than before.
Cervecería Aurelia is a restaurant offering traditional “pub food” with Paraguayan and British twists. The establishment serves British food such as fish and chips and Scotch eggs, as well as Paraguayan favourites such as empanadas, as well as traditional gastro-pub fare such as cheeseburgers, mushroom sandwiches, pate with focaccia, fried chicken, and fries. You also have multiple options for beers and drinks. That night, I shared fries with friends while drinking some beer. In terms of food, one of the employees told me that the chicken, the empanadas, and the fries were the best-seller and most-liked items. As for the beers specifically, the Irish stout and the American pale ale are the one popular. I asked some people how they liked their food and was only told positive comments. I really liked my fries and the beers. I tried the two most popular ones and enjoyed them.
I really liked the place. When you arrive there, in the exterior as much as in the interior, you can feel the British pub vibe of the establishment. It is very charming and has a cozy environment. They have places inside and outside, the latter having more space. When we were there, we were around 75 people. The restaurant is super clean. The personnel are also super friendly, and some of them speak English, which is great if you are still learning Spanish. The establishment is also located on a “side street,” being close to a big street while being in a quiet area.
As for the price, all plates at Cervecería Aurelia cost between 15K and 69K Guaraníes plus the beverage. The fries are the dish listed at 15K. The fish and chips are listed at 69K, but it is normal, as they are not meals you typically find here. It is really worth that. All prices make sense. You can also look for potential promotions for beers and drinks on their social media. Like in most places but not all, you can pay with your foreign cards, local cards, and cash.
The restaurant is located on Calle San Miguel, close to Avenida Venezuela. The best way to reach it is to go north on Avenida Venezuela from Avenida Mariscal López or Avenida España and turn left on Benigno Villamayor. If you come from General Artigas, go south on Avenida Venezuela and turn right on Francisco Escurra. There is no official parking, but none is necessary. There are enough spaces around the restaurant to park your car. You can also order a Bolt or an Uber easily. They are open five days a week, from 6 PM to around 1 PM. Cervecería Aurelia is closed on Sundays and Mondays.
