Paraguay’s U20 national football team has won South American Games football gold in Santa Fe, defending their title in a tense final against hosts Argentina. The match, held at the Marcelo Bielsa Stadium, was decided by a penalty shootout after ending in a goalless draw.
The Paraguayan side demonstrated superior nerve from the penalty spot, converting all five of their kicks to win the shootout 5-4. The decisive moment came when Argentina’s Leandro Olima missed his attempt. Defender Mauro Coronel scored the final, winning penalty for Paraguay, securing the victory and silencing the home crowd.
A hard-fought final
The final was a tense and tightly contested match, with neither team willing to concede ground. As was common throughout the tournament, Paraguay took the initiative and created the better opportunities but struggled with their finishing. Forward Pedro Zarza was a notable presence in attack for Paraguay, while Coronel was a formidable force in defence for the team managed by Antolín Alcaraz.

Paraguay completed the tournament without a single defeat. Their successful campaign included victories over Argentina in their opening group stage match, as well as wins against Uruguay and Chile en route to the final. The team conceded only one goal throughout the entire competition, a testament to their strong defensive organisation.
This victory marks Paraguay’s third gold medal in men’s football at the South American Games. The nation previously triumphed in La Paz in 1978 and on home soil in Asunción in 2022. The win in Santa Fe is seen as a significant achievement, highlighting a promising new generation of players for the senior national team.
