The Rally of Paraguay 2026 has unveiled its official trophy, “Caskuchi,” a piece deeply inspired by the culture, craftsmanship, and landscape of Paraguay. The Rally Of Paraguay trophy will be presented on the podium of the World Rally Championship (WRC) as a symbol of national identity.
The trophy’s unique design is a fusion of a traditional Paraguayan vessel, the kambuchi, and the shape of a rally driver’s helmet. Its creation was entrusted to artisan Sandra Ortega and her family, who uphold the pottery tradition in the San Rafael neighbourhood of the 21 de Julio community, located in Paraguay’s Cordillera department.
An artisanal creation from the earth
The manufacturing process uses ñai’u, a type of clay sourced from a local quarry. Each trophy is individually moulded by hand, undergoes a careful drying process, and is then fired in a traditional Paraguayan oven known as the tatakua. This method ensures that every Caskuchi trophy is a unique piece of art.
The tatakua, a Guarani word meaning “fire hole,” is a rustic, dome-shaped oven made from bricks and mud, traditionally used for baking local foods. Its use in firing the trophies imparts a distinct character to each one, connecting the award directly to Paraguayan culinary and craft heritage.
Caskuchi visual concept and symbolism
The visual concept for the trophy was developed by urban artist Rolo Ocampos. His inspiration was drawn from the relationship between the horses that roam the Paraguayan countryside and the “horsepower” of the rally car engines. This concept seeks to represent the powerful link between the high-performance vehicles and the nation’s natural environment.
The design incorporates images of birds, which symbolise freedom, movement, and overcoming challenges. Furthermore, the trophy serves as a tribute to the drivers who navigate the demanding Paraguayan roads, demonstrating a combination of speed, precision, and skill.
A collaboration of craftsmanship
The final piece is a collaborative effort. The design is completed with wooden bases developed by architect Carlos Cáceres of Trenino, and features plates crafted by the traditional goldsmith workshop, Joyería Alegre.
The entire project was supported by the Paraguayan Institute of Handicrafts (IPA), the national body responsible for promoting and preserving the country’s artisanal traditions. The IPA’s involvement highlights the cultural significance of the trophy and its role in showcasing national talent on a global stage.
The rally returns to Itapúa
The second edition of the Rally del Paraguay is scheduled to take place from 27 to 30 August 2026. The event will see 60 crews compete on the distinctive red-earth tracks of the Itapúa department.
Competitors will vie for the Caskuchi trophy, an award that represents the identity, landscape, and traditions of Paraguay. In addition to the race, the event will feature public activities, including a Symbolic Start, a Fan Zone & Service Park, and the official Awards Ceremony, projecting the country as a major venue for international motorsport.
