Paraguay has experienced a remarkable 62% increase in residency applications from foreign nationals during the first six months of 2026. This data, released by the National Directorate of Migration (Dirección Nacional de Migraciones, DNM), highlights a significant surge compared to the same period in the previous year. The official figures show an unprecedented level of interest from individuals seeking to establish themselves in the country.
Between January and June of this year, the migration authority processed a total of 33,243 applications. Specifically, this figure comprises 27,024 requests for temporary residency. In addition, the DNM received 6,219 applications for permanent residency status. This substantial growth in volume, following Q1 of 2026, reflects a burgeoning trend of foreign citizens choosing Paraguay as their new home.
Migration agency implements contingency measures
The 62% rise places considerable administrative pressure on governmental departments responsible for immigration. Consequently, the DNM has acknowledged the challenge posed by this unprecedented demand. The institution is now tasked with managing a workload that far exceeds previous projections and historical norms.
In response to this developing situation, the National Directorate of Migration has officially launched a comprehensive contingency plan. Firstly, the directorate has extended its standard working hours for the staff involved in application processing. Furthermore, additional work shifts have been scheduled on non-working days, including weekends and public holidays. These measures are intended to maximise productivity and significantly increase the number of files processed each week, thereby tackling the growing queue of applications.
