Paraguay, through its Seeds of the Future (Semillas del Futuro) programme, has announced the launch of a new trilingual book collection for children titled Voices of Our Land (Voces de Nuestra Tierra). This educational and cultural initiative is designed to support the development of children during their earliest years. Furthermore, the collection will serve as a key pedagogical tool for the new Comprehensive Care Centres for Early Childhood (CAIPI), which are scheduled to begin opening across the country.
The project forms a central part of Paraguay’s national strategy to enhance comprehensive care during early childhood. This period is recognised as a crucial stage of human development, where curiosity, language, imagination, and the foundations of learning are first established. The project was driven by the Office of the First Lady of the Nation and the Ministry of Childhood and Adolescence.
A trilingual book collection designed for early learning
The new publishing initiative consists of 12 books created specifically for young children. The collection is divided into six durable cardboard books and six soft fabric books, each thoughtfully designed to accompany children through different stages of their early development. A significant feature of the series is its trilingual format; all titles are available in Spanish, Guaraní, and English. This approach aims to promote an early appreciation for Paraguay’s cultural identity while also introducing children to other languages from a young age.
The books explore themes deeply connected to the natural and cultural richness of Paraguay. Topics covered include the nation’s diverse fauna, the unique flavours of the land, traditional musical instruments like the Paraguayan harp, and the landscapes, colours, and customs that shape daily life in the country. Each story invites children to explore their surroundings through simple narratives, relatable illustrations, and engaging characters designed to stimulate curiosity.
A journey through Paraguayan identity
The protagonist of the collection is Mara, a brave yaguareté (jaguar), who guides young readers on a journey across Paraguay. Through Mara’s adventures, the stories introduce animals, places, sounds, and traditions that are integral to the national identity. This narrative approach helps children to discover nature, value their culture, and develop a strong sense of belonging from their earliest years.
The collection was written by author Melitta Santos, with illustrations provided by Verónica Talavera. Together, they developed a narrative and visual universe specifically conceived to accompany children on their first voyages of discovery.
In a tribute to the country’s artisans and cultural heritage, each collection is presented in a special box. These boxes are handcrafted by artisans from Carapeguá, using 100% cotton threads woven on manual looms. This choice honours the traditional skills that form a vital part of Paraguay’s cultural patrimony.
First support centre to open soon
The books from the Voices of Our Land collection will be made available at the CAIPI centres. These spaces will provide early stimulation, educational support, and safe environments for the healthy development of children. The first of these centres is set to be inaugurated on 31 March, 2026, marking the beginning of a national network of facilities dedicated to early childhood care. Consequently, thousands of children will have the opportunity to learn, play, and grow with pedagogical materials designed specifically for their age group.
