Paraguayan Air Force Marks 103 Years With Focus On New Aircraft And National Defence

The Paraguayan Military Aviation (Fuerza Aérea Paraguaya) is celebrating its 103rd anniversary, underscoring its modern mission to defend the nation and combat organised crime. The commemorative ceremony was held on 20 February, 2026, at the headquarters of the Paraguayan Air Force.

During the event, the Commander of the Paraguayan Air Force, General of the Air Julio Fullaondo, reflected on the institution’s long and significant history. He highlighted the importance of this milestone, which honours the legacy of the Military Aviation School established in 1923, the institution that gave rise to the modern Air Force.

The Paraguayan Air Force is set to enhance its capabilities with new Super Tucano aircraft and advanced radar systems. These additions will tighten national security operations, particularly in the surveillance and control of the country’s airspace and the fight against drug trafficking.

A legacy of service and commitment

General Fullaondo emphasised that the anniversary serves as a moment of renewed dedication to the principles of the institution. He spoke of a revitalised commitment to serving the Armed Forces and the entire nation. This occasion, therefore, is not only a reflection on past achievements, but also a forward-looking pledge to continue safeguarding Paraguay’s interests with integrity and professionalism.

In his address, Fullaondo remarked on the significant investments the Paraguayan government has made in national defence. These strategic investments have provided the Air Force with crucial new equipment. Consequently, the force is better positioned to fulfil its primary mandate of national defence while also undertaking a variety of other critical missions in collaboration with different state institutions.

Modernisation to combat emerging threats

The acquisition of new aircraft and radars represents a substantial step forward in the country’s defence strategy, he stated. General Fullaondo identified drug trafficking and transnational organised crime as the principal threats currently facing the region. He affirmed that the addition of the Super Tucano aircraft and modern radar systems will significantly enhance the Air Force’s ability to confront these challenges effectively.

A multifaceted role in national development

Beyond its core defence duties, the Paraguayan Air Force plays a crucial role in national development and civil support. General Fullaondo noted that the Armed Forces contribute to the country’s progress in numerous areas, often in support of other state institutions. For instance, the Air Force utilises its aerial assets to combat the growing problem of forest fires, which have become increasingly frequent and destructive.

In addition, the force is heavily involved in providing essential humanitarian aid. Fullaondo highlighted the critical service of aeromedical evacuations, revealing that a record was set last year with more than 130 successful evacuations. These operations transported patients from some of the most remote parts of the country, often in partnership with the Ministry of Public Health.

Some missions even involved transferring patients to other countries for specialised care. The Air Force also provides vital assistance during natural disasters, such as transporting people and delivering provisions during floods, demonstrating its permanent readiness to respond to national needs.
