A Taste Of Germany In Paraguay: Oktoberfest 2025 Is Around The Corner!

Also in October 2025, multiple events related to the internationally famous Oktoberfest will be held in and around Asunción. Celebrating Germany and its southern region Bavaria, the event unites and connects Germans to all the other nationalities in Paraguay. Even far from the land of Europe, Oktoberfest 2025 is celebrated in multiple countries, such as Paraguay, where German presence is constantly growing.

What is Oktoberfest?

Oktoberfest is the world’s largest Volksfest, or “people’s festival,” held annually in Munich, Germany. It is a celebration of Bavarian culture, blending a massive beer festival with a funfair. Though the name suggests October, the event typically begins in mid-September and runs until the first Sunday in October. Now, the Oktoberfest is celebrated everywhere in Germany and in multiple countries around the world, like Paraguay.

The festival is famous for its large beer tents. In Paraguay, thousands of visitors gather at communal tables to drink special Oktoberfest beer from one-litre mugs called Steins. The atmosphere inside is lively and festive, filled with traditional Bavarian brass band music.

German presence in Paraguay

The German presence in Paraguay is a significant part of the country’s social and economic fabric, shaped by waves of immigration that began in the late 19th century. Early settlers, like those in the failed Nueva Germania colony, were followed by large communities of Mennonites in the 1920s. The Mennonites, in particular, transformed Paraguay’s arid Chaco region into a productive agricultural area, focusing on dairy and farming.

German influence is most notable in specific communities, such as Filadelfia, and towns in the Itapúa Department, including Hohenau. Here, the German language is still being spoken, and traditions are maintained. The legacy of German immigration is evident in the agricultural sector, where German-Paraguayan cooperatives are major producers of soybeans and other crops, significantly contributing to the national economy. More recently, a high number of German immigration arrived in Paraguay, drawn by the country’s relaxed lifestyle and economic opportunities.

The Embassy of Germany is responsible for representing the interests of Germany in Paraguay. Their office is located near Avenida Mariscal López in Asunción, in the Barrio Mariscal López area. For business opportunities, people can count on the German-Paraguayan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIPA). Paraguay and Germany are also two countries seeking opportunities for economic integration.
