Stories that inspire: From Paraguay to the world
Studying in the United States not only opens academic doors but also transforms lives. Young Paraguayans such as Lia Portillo and Camily Hidalgo are examples of this, achieving their dreams through effort and with the support of EducationUSA and the Opportunity Funds programme.
Lia Portillo, from the Opportunity Funds programme, was accepted into Tufts University in Boston with a full scholarship to study Civil Engineering. During her education, she won medals in the National Physics Olympiad and competitions organised by the Association of Physics Teachers of Paraguay (AFPF), and she also excelled in regional interschool competitions.
At her school, Lia served as President and Vice-President of the Student Council, led the creation of 15 clubs, and presided over three of them (Debate, English and Physics). She also actively participated in community service activities, such as the Corazones Abiertos campaign.
Camily Hidalgo, from Ciudad del Este, studies Chemistry and Neuroscience at Williams College with a full scholarship. She combines her academic training with leadership and social commitment, participating in educational and environmental initiatives, and developing scientific research projects.
Stories such as these demonstrate how an educational opportunity can open doors, develop talents and change lives.
