Paraguay’s National Directorate of Migration (DNM) implemented enhanced border control measures at the Posadas–Encarnación International Crossing between Argentina and Paraguay. This is in preparation for the World Rally Championship (WRC) Paraguay 2025, scheduled for 28-31 August in the Itapúa Department.
The event, the first WRC in Paraguay, is expected to attract numerous national and international spectators. The Paraguayan DNM, in collaboration with its Argentine counterpart, will therefore increase security at the Posadas–Encarnación crossing.
Since July, this border crossing has utilised a new unified migratory control system based on Mutual Recognition of Competences (Reconocimiento Recíproco de Competencias or RRC). This streamlines entry and exit procedures for both countries, eliminating duplicated checks and reducing wait times for road and rail travel.
Entry requirements for WRC visitors
In anticipation of WRC visitors, the DNM reminds travellers of the current entry and exit requirements:
- A valid identity document: only for visitors from Mercosur member and associated countries.
- A valid passport: required for all other nationalities.
- Visa: necessary only for citizens of countries requiring this for entry into Paraguay, either through consular channels or upon arrival.
The DNM urges travellers to check the necessary documentation in advance, to ensure a smooth and safe passage. This international event highlights Paraguay’s position on the global motorsports calendar.
Streamlined border crossing procedures
Under the RRC system, immigration processes for Paraguay and Argentina are handled exclusively on the Argentine side, using a shared digital registry. It is important to note that, due to this unified control, physical documentation is no longer issued to foreign nationals crossing via the San Roque González de Santacruz International Bridge or the Posadas–Encarnación train.
Furthermore, Paraguayan Migration authorities will bolster services at Itapúa’s river checkpoints and Encarnación’s Lieutenant Amín Ayub Airport. Details regarding the operating hours and locations of Itapúa’s river checkpoints can be found on Paraguay’s National Directorate of Migration’s official website.
