Paraguay’s main international airport will undergo expansion and modernisation after passenger growth numbers reached a record level in 2025. Silvio Pettirossi International Airport handled 1,327,342 passengers, surpassing figures from previous years. The sustained growth is placing increasing pressure on terminal capacity and operational services. Authorities say infrastructure upgrades are now unavoidable.
The record figures reflect a strong rebound in both domestic and international travel, highlighting Paraguay’s growing appeal as a regional hub for tourism, business, and cargo operations across South America.
Urgent infrastructure upgrades
Nelson Mendoza, president of the National Directorate of Civil Aeronautics (DINAC), confirmed steady growth in passenger arrivals and departures over recent months. Mendoza said the rising demand requires accelerated investment in airport infrastructure and technology. “There has been sustained growth in passenger movement at our terminal, and this requires us to continue expanding,” Mendoza said.
The airport has already opened a new boarding terminal equipped with upgraded technological systems to improve comfort and efficiency. However, Mendoza explained that similar improvements are now required in arrival areas and other operational zones. Therefore, expansion works will focus on balancing passenger flow and reducing congestion during peak hours.
São Paulo, Buenos Aires, and Madrid lead traffic volumes
Mendoza highlighted that the busiest routes currently connect Asunción with São Paulo and Buenos Aires, both acting as major regional transit hubs. Madrid also registers strong demand, with more than 300 passengers travelling daily. Panamá remains another key international connection supporting long-haul and regional transfers. Meanwhile, Mendoza addressed reports of delays on flights to Montevideo. Nevertheless, airport authorities continue monitoring operational performance to maintain service standards and passenger confidence.
Passenger growth has also boosted airline interest in expanding frequencies and exploring new routes. Tourism operators report rising demand from business travellers and regional visitors. In addition, improved connectivity strengthens Paraguay’s role as a logistical gateway for trade, conferences, and international events, supporting broader economic development and regional integration efforts.
