From March 17 to March 22, the Alianza Francesa of Asunción will host a “French Week,” or “Semana de la Lengua Francesa y de la Francofonía.” This event celebrates the diverse cultures of the Francophone world. Organised by the Embassy of France and Alianza Francesa, it features engaging activities designed to immerse attendees in French culture. Other partners who made this week possible are the Embassy of Canada, Switzerland, Belgium, Costa Rica, Lebanon, and Morocco as well as the Institut Français and the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie.
This week of festivity follows in the footstep of the Korean Day: K-Pop Culture Celebrated In The Capital Of Paraguay, “Days of Japanese Culture” coming to Asunción, and Natsubon: A Summer Celebration of Japanese Culture in Yguazú, Paraguay, all promiting cultures not native to Paraguay.
Events & Activities
The Alianza Francesa will offer a lot of activities and events during the week, and they are all free!
- Live Performance: Acclaimed artist Nuez Amado will perform from 2 PM to 2:30 PM on March 22. She will present a selection of French music, offering an intimate experience of melodies from the Hexagon. From 5 PM to 8 PM, DJ Dulce will be performing. On the same date, from 8 PM to 9 PM, Gypsy Jazz Le Trio will also be performing.
- Virtual Reality Experience: On the same day, from 1:30 PM to 6:30 PM, participants can explore cultural landscapes through a unique virtual reality event titled Realidad Virtual, organised by Nicolás Merens.
- Film Screenings: Attendees will enjoy carefully curated Francophone films that highlight the stories of French-speaking communities.
- Lectures and Discussions: Experts will discuss the cultural and linguistic richness of the Francophone world.
- Gastronomy Workshops: Enjoy tastings and workshops that showcase the exquisite flavours of Francophone cuisines.
In March, the Alianza Francesa will also offer both in-person and virtual French courses. These courses cater to learners of all ages and promote linguistic proficiency and cultural engagement.
The Influence Of French In South America
French culture is gaining popularity in South America. French Guiana is the only region where French is the official language, with nearly all 300,000 residents speaking it. Countries like Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay recognize French as an important foreign language. This emphasis on French increases the significance of opportunities available during French Week. French Week in Asunción celebrates language, music, art, and cuisine. It is an excellent opportunity to embrace unity and cultural diversity.
