Join Our Fantasy Premier League, And Compete For The Asunción Times VIP Membership!

If you are a football fan in Paraguay, chances are you already follow the excitement of the English Premier League (EPL). With its world-class players, historic clubs, and passionate rivalries, it’s one of the most-watched leagues in the world. But did you know there is a way to take your enjoyment of the Premier League to the next level – and potentially win a lifetime VIP membership from The Asunción Times while you are at it?

Let us introduce you to Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – the official, free-to-play fantasy football game that lets you become the manager.

What is Fantasy Premier League?

Fantasy Premier League is an online game where you build your own team of real-life Premier League footballers. Each week, your players earn points based on their performances in the real matches – goals, assists, clean sheets, and even minutes played all count.

Your task is to pick the best combination of players and manage your squad over the course of the season. You will have to make tough decisions, like whether to captain a high-scoring striker or take a chance on a budget midfielder. It is competitive, strategic, and a lot of fun – especially when you are playing with friends or against others from your community.

How does it work?

Here are the basics to get you started:

  • Budget: You have a virtual £100 million to spend on your squad of 15 players – that is 2 goalkeepers, 5 defenders, 5 midfielders, and 3 forwards.
  • Points: Players score points each Gameweek based on their real-life performances. Goals, assists, clean sheets, and even saves contribute to your score.
  • Transfers: You can make free transfers each week to bring in new players. You will need to plan ahead to deal with injuries, suspensions, and tough fixtures.
  • Captain: Each week, you pick a captain whose points are doubled – choosing the right one can make a huge difference.
  • Chips: You also get special “chips” like the Wildcard, Triple Captain, and Bench Boost to help you out during the season.

It is easy to learn, but there is a real challenge in staying consistent over the season. Best of all, it is completely free to play.

Paraguayans in the Premier League

There is even more reason to get involved this season: Paraguay is proudly represented in the Premier League, and you can choose to support our own stars by picking them for your team.

Julio Enciso, the youngest ever player to feature for Club Libertad in Paraguay, is at Brighton & Hove Albion. A player regarded as having huge potential, he is capable of producing moments of magic. Whilst he is currently injured and not expected to feature until mid-October, as the season progresses, he may become a valuable budget option in midfield, priced at just £5.5m.

Joining Enciso at Brighton & Hove Albion is Diego Gomez, another Paraguayan who also came through the ranks at Club Libertad. Since joining the EPL in December 2024, he has notched up 16 appearances, and scored his first EPL goal in a 4-1 victory against Tottenham Hotspur on the final day of the 2024-25 season in May 2025. He is priced at just £5m.

Enzo Gonzalez is at Wolverhampton Wanderers, and was also at Club Libertad before making the move to England in August 2023. With just one appearance so far, he is unlikely to be a big points scorer this season, and is priced at a budget-friendly £4.5m.

The Wall of Asunión, and Paraguay’s rising talent

Omar Alderete, the “Wall Of Asunción”, has been the main man in some of Paraguay’s recent victories as La Albirroja march towards World Cup qualification. After starting his career at Cerro Porteño, he joined newly-promoted side Sunderland FC just yesterday (12th August 2025) to embark on his first Premier League campaign. Whilst his transfer is so recent he hasn’t even been priced up yet by the official game, he could be a bargain pick at an estimated price of between £4.5-5.5m. With the new introduction of “defensive contribution” points in the FPL game this season, Alderete may be just as important for FPL players as he is for Paraguay!

The fifth and final Paraguayan featuring in the Premier League this season is the rising talent Diego León, the 18-year-old left-sided defender or wing-back from Yguazú. After a couple of seasons with Cerro Porteño where he scored 4 goals in just 33 appearances – great stats for a defender – Diego León was signed by EPL giants Manchester United and could be a bargain at just £4.5m, if he can secure a regular starting place in the team.

By including players like León, Alderete and Enciso in your FPL squad, you are not just playing the game – you are celebrating Paraguay’s talent on the world stage.
